Any good websites to keep on top of this information as I really want to upgrade from my Viewsonic vx2268wm 120hz 22inch monitor 1680 x 1050.

Has there been any news or a release date or rumors about better monitors that can support 120hz such as IPS panels and higher resolution than 1920 x 1080 as I recall its limited resolution is something to do with the bandwidth so might not see an increase in a very long time?

I was tempted to upgrade to the Samsung 950d but at a small step up in resolution and extra few inches just isnt worth that huge price increase for no increase in picture quality, not to mention the reflecton that would be a huge issue for me.

Im using a 4-5yr old HP monitor and I'm desperate for a new replacement but I'm waiting for somethin that stands out

Hi Lighters, what do you think of your Viewsonic vx2268wm? I was thinking of possibly getting that monitor, mainly for gaming (FPS) and the web.

Had it for 2 years and its been one of the best upgrades I have ever made. It feels so smooth having 120hz especially in FPS as theres 0 mouse lag and no blur when moving about a map fast such as QL or even Call Of Duty when turning quickly.

However despite being very smooth it has a smaller resolution of 1680 x 1050 and also is something like 22 or 21.5inch I cant remember. The colours seem fine but ofcourse the viewing angles are like any TN panel so dont expect anything amazing but its been no different to any other monitor I have used. The stand on mine which I think is quite old feels very flimsy as if it would snap but its been fine, however due to the stand its hard to get the correct position as you cant move the monitor updown/leftright to adjust viewing experience which can suck really hard. Options are basic but do the job. Used to have problems attaining 120hz within the 1st month but havent had that problem over the past 2 years so all good.

I would advise getting the Logitech 120hz monitor that is something like 23inch as it also has 1920 x 1080 and has excellent reviews about extremely low input lag as well as good colours and not very much/no backlight bleed.

I've not had chance to even witness a 120Hz monitor in action, could someone explain succinctly what the performance upgrade is even when not using the nVidia 3D Vision kit?

Thank you Lighters for your detailed feedback. The resolution was one of the things holding me back, I might look at the 1920 x 1080, 120hz monitors instead.

It basically refreshes the screen 2x as fast so instead of 60x a second it does it 120x a second. The difference is as clear as night especially when using 120hz then instantly changing it to 60hz.

The best examples I can give are when you play a game with 30fps and it seems very slow and laggy, some people are fine and very tolerant but after playing with 60fps or higher you realise how slow the game plays and its a lot harder to twitch aim (Aim quickly by snapping to a target) It almost feels as if your mouse lags and has a long delay even when browsing windows and the internet etc.

So the difference in terms of feeling is massive as its so much more responsive and just feels that much better. The problem is once you have went to 120hz you then realise how bad 60hz is and with the current problem being 120hz monitors dont have higher resolutions or good enough panels to compete with the best.

The visual difference isnt as huge but its definitely there although you do need to look for it or know what you are looking for. I mentioned earlier that there is a blur on 60hz when moving your mouse i.e turning around or aiming fast. It also looks like the slow-down you get when you enter a massive battlefield and your fps drops very low but it isnt as dramatic and you dont notice as much but I had people behind me at a LAN event going your game looks so smooth!

-EDIT Your welcome Rec. The LG W236D 23" True 120hz http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-091-LG&groupid=17&catid=1851&subcat=

Everyone has great things to say about this and even better is that its very cheap compared to the others it also has a higher resolution. The resolution seems minor but I notice when playing on my 17inch widescreen laptop at 1920 x 1080 LoL feels better despite being on a smaller screen. I was thinking of getting the LG myself but its a 1inch upgrade and not really worth the money to me, hence why I am speculating about when the new technology/monitors come out.

Depends on your eyes really.

Like frame rate in game, its one of the cases that some people notice instantly, some will probably not notice, and some will only notice if you have a 60hz screen next to it so you can switch quickly between them.

Its meant to give you a smoother gameplaying experience (not higher frame rate), with less blur than a 60hz screen.

I have the LG and it's great, but you may not see much of an upgrade tbh. Yes you will get a slightly higher resolution but your aspect ratio will go from 16:10 to 16:9, and most people see this as a disadvantage, but it's really personal preference (I've not really noticed the change).

Also that LG has been a LOT cheaper than that before, almost £50 cheaper, so maybe worth waiting if you did want to upgrade.

These new 120Hz Samsung monitors with the built in 3D may force competitors to bring something new out, but at the moment they are so expensive.

After that it's OLED monitors which are some time away. Plenty of people on here can tell you about that better than me.

PS were you at i43? Was following CSS mainly so only saw one Cod4 game.

I think I may wait to upgrade, then. My screen real estate is important to me for working at home, and I reckon I'd choose a 2560 wide monitor over a framerate boost right now if I was going into the higher-end.

Yes Sundance I was at i43 playing Call Of Duty 4. And just to make it clear Pixellated it doesnt offer a FPS boost I said it was similiar to an FPS boost as to how much smoother it feels. So at 30fps its still going to be poor if you dont have a tolerance for it. However it will feel so much smoother when moving the mouse and aiming and seeing detail in the background lol. Quite hard to describe really :)

All I can say is once you go 120hz you really dont want to go back... at all

Are 120Hz monitors kinda like SSDs in the way that you don't really see what the fuss is about until you try it for yourself? I recently bought a 2233rz from the MM for a measly 65 pound so I got a bargain. Unfortunately it never came with a dual link DVI cable and I've been using a single link DVI cable so I haven't had the chance to try 120Hz out yet but hopefully the cable I bought will come tomorrow.

Cant comment on the SSD as I havent taken the step yet. Report back yourself please on the difference you find between 60/120hz. Try it on the fly so play a game with 60 then switch to 120 and see what you think! I can tell straight away if windows boots up in 60hz

I tried it out for the first time in CSS the other day. It's very noticeable. Also jaggies appear much worse.

Doubt I could go back to 60Hz tbh.

What am I doing wrong! We have two 120hz screens at work and I cannot tell the difference :S Granted I've only seen dirt 3 and f1 2011 on them... Yes they are set to 120hz in game. Is it only noticeable on fps games?

You wont notice much difference between 60hz and 120hz in driving games. The movement simply isn't fast enough. The main benefit of 120hz can be seen in fps games where a 180 degree turn is done in the blink of an eye. Of course, if you play these games with a controller instead of mouse the benefit of 120hz is once again lost.

When I was testing the XL2410T on Dirt 2 I noticed that despite selecting a 120Hz refresh rate the game was actually only running at 60Hz - or at least, framerate was capped at 60fps. I would turn on Vsync, run Fraps and see what frame rate you're getting.
