First Car?

Ooh, I think I just mastered irony, ZING!

T'was intentional ;).
It is nice to see someone can read :).

It's his first car, age is irrelevant.

You will find not many young people have written off cars, it is more the same chavs writing off cars repeatedly.
At least my 6th form was like that anyway.
Age always has some impact. I know it is only two years but a 19 year old lad is quite a bit more mature than a 17 year old one.

Alright, well thanks for the pointers guys. Ill definitely look into a cheap car that will get me from A to B and worry about a more decent car after a year or two as insurance (hopefully) doesn't cost as much.
Currently looking at some classic coopers for under a grand that I can knock about since I always wanted one, but I guess ill settle for something that has 4 wheels at the end of the day.
Hopefully will have an update about what I get in 2-3 weeks.

Good luck with what ever you buy :)

Yeah, tbh it's seems the fashion on this forum at the moment to correct people's grammar. It was fine when Von/Non and one or two others did it and always had done but the bandwagon jumpers wind me up so much, Especially when the comment made has no relation to what is being discussed. Oh well they are the only ones who end up looking like fools :)

Don't spend that much on your first car, your going to kill it.

I had my first car for nearly 3 years and didnt put any dents or scratches in it, nor did i flip it into a ditch.

I did then go and crash my second car which was worth considerably more resulting in it being a write off.

Your not always guarenteed to crash your first car just because you are young an inexperienced. I understand you are more likely too, but it doesnt mean you only have to spend £500 on one if you can afford a bit more. I would agree spending 10 grand on a new one would be silly, but 4K on a car and 1K on insurance isnt too over the top for a first car.

Ignoring all the crap about grammar, do not buy a mini for 1k, it is just asking for a whole world of pain unless you are handy with a welder.

I would say get a fiesta or corsa or something. Cheap, reliable (if maintained), relatively low insurance groups depending on the model.

Think about how many 10 year old fiestas and corsas you see on the roads, LOADS

Bugatti Veyron. Get your mother as a named driver, should make insurance ok.

In the land of srs bsns...as said, fiestas, clios, corsas..the typical youthly cars. Should be able to squeeze insurance under 1k unless your postcode is in Helmand province.

Get a Skoda, no young person wants to drive them.

Specifically the Fabia.

They're really good cars, its just that some people are very narrow minded.

The advice is to always buy a small car with a puny engine like everyone else. My experience was different. I got a big saab insured for a lot less than all my friends with fiestas, sciecentos, clios etc. (IIRC i paid around £600 less than the next cheapest) Plus point for me was my car came with all the mod cons like climate control, cruise control and a comfortable interior. (and well over 200hp, which is a bit much for a first car) Insurance has gone up a lot since then but it was under £500 for me 2 years back. (and i live at a bad post code) I've not crashed or damaged it yet either and it has been reliable.

Don't discount cars that you think will be expensive. Look at big older cars too. Young people don't touch big cars because they are big and difficult to park, but it helps teach you to drive properly.

And because they're 'uncool' and because they think the insurance will be 'mad expensive'.

something off the beaten track, maybe one of the korean marques.

anything that young gents dont buy(and crash) in large numbers.

strange car choice will = cheaper insurance
