Stock Intel cooler on I7 2600k

Hi guys,

I have just upgraded my CPU, motherboard and memory.
New Bits:- i7 2600k (stock cooler), Asus P67 Sabertooth, Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB.

Everything installed and running ok at stock speeds on CPU (XMP profile on memory for 1600MHz).
Only glitch was that the mobo does not support ATA drives so had to replace my DVD as well.

Idle speeds are around 40c for CPU (a little higher than I would like), 25 to 40c for everything else.
I tried running Prime95, 8 threads, CPU temp reached 90c within 2 mins so I stopped it (that is also a little warmer than I’m comfortable with).

I tried disabling HT to see if that had any effect, no difference (maybe 1-2c).
Reseated the cooler 3 times now, replaced stock thermal paste with Silver 5.
Every time I removed the cooler, the contact looks good, I don’t think it’s a problem with the heatsink or fan.

Should I be seeing these temps? I know Prime95 really hits the CPU hard.
Other people have reported idle temps of up to 40c.

I’m thinking about getting a Noctua NH-C14 cooler (down blowing fan required for Mobo).
Is this overkill if I’m not planning on overclocking?

If I get this cooler, does anyone know if I can keep the bottom fan (Vengeance memory is pretty tall)?

Any other recommendations for this setup?

I suspect the XMP profile is overvolting the CPU, try setting your bios to defaults and run the memory at stock 1333mhz without the XMP profile.

What's your case cooling like btw? plenty of airflow to keep the air inside the case cool?

check your cooler hasn't popped a pin and/or reseat it with fresh TIM, those temps are way too high

The other components are staying below 35c so i dont think the temp in the case is effected by the load.

I'll screenshot the Z-CPU before, set the memory back to stock 1333 and check again.

I have checked this about 100 times ;).
I have re-seated 3 times now using different TIMs, same temps everytime.

I dont mind the 40c when idle, its just the 92+ thats worring.

I'll check all the v settings to see if its been automatically over volted.

Thanks

As you can see, a slight increase in CoreV, 0.046.
CPU temp hits 90+ in < 1 min after starting an 8 thread TortureTest

Sounds to me like poor airflow, what case and what fans, exhaust and intake?

120mm intake at the front, 120mm exhaust at the back.

The pic of the graph was running prime with only 4 threads.
That only 50% loads the CPU.

You can see that the temp drops to ~45 within 20 secs of stopping the test.
The other temps are not really effected during the test.

The 90+ temps is running prime with 8 threads, 100% load.

I'm very much considering getting the Noctua NH-C14.
Any thoughts?

I get 29c idle and 65c load on my i7 at 4.5ghz on my H50, very pleased with it and reasonable priced. It replaced a TRUE

It's actually about 90% usage with 4 threads, same load as 2500K. :)

I think if you got a 3rd party cooler like that you'd see a substantial drop, one more thing to check though is the stock fan spinning up under load? you don't have it plugged in the wrong header with QFan or something enabled?

yeah try putting the fan on full speed in the bios and ensure its into the 4 pin CPU header. Sorry if that sounds a bit 'Janet and John' but this is unusual, the stocks are normally very fit for purpose at 'stock'

Fan speed is set to Turbo and is spinning up to ~1800 under load.
1000 to 1100 when idle.

I believe the max speed for the stock cooler is 1800.

It's def in the 4 pin header, I think QFan is enabled by default but as the fan is spinning at full speed under load...?

I'm running the CPU with hyper threading on, I remember checking the CPU usage when prime running with 4 thread but I dont remember it being 90%.

I might be wrong but 1800RPM sounds very low to me for a stock cooler, I've never used the 2600K stock cooler but I would look into that if I was you.

Windows will report 50% load but it's actually almost full load if all 4 of the real cores are being used.

I can't find any info on the web regarding the stock cooler.
I'll have a play with the BIOS settings later, see if I can ramp it up.

The Turbo profile runs the fan at 100% at the lowest temp of all the profiles.
It's possible that my MoBo cant actually run the fan at 100%.

I'm using the P67 Sabertooth, anyone else running this mobo?
Any advise?

No that's the coolers top RPM.

My 2600k with a stock cooler sits at 36c idle, and ramps up to the 70s if I cane it.

I have just been playing with the settings and checking my fan speeds again.
Best I can do is 2000rpm.

I'm leaning to the Noctua again, I'll order 1 next week.

eep I think I need a new cooler. Reading what other people get my i5 runs about 40c idle and 80-90 in prime after a couple of mins. Never goes above 90 though. However in game it never really goes above 70.

This artic freezer 13 is pretty poor :(
