Ive just bought myself a new car is a x reg volvo v70, it has a 2.4l engine and my previous car was a 1.8. When i pull away i have to be very careful with the clutch as it stalls the car. Is this just me needing to get used to it or is this the car. I was serviced regularly, so it was looked after.

Sounds like the clutch might be on the way out if theres not much between fiding the bite point and the clutch being fully engaged.

One of our works van's is like that, the clutch is like a switch and very hard to drive slowly.

Cars are all different, and some can take a bit of getting used to. I'd give it some time before you start going looking for a fault. In the meantime, dab a touch more throttle in, and let off the clutch a little more gently, and see how you get on.

That's a pretty good mileage if it's still on the original clutch though isn't it?

In fairness my comment was alittle tongue in cheek. I have no idea when a volvo clutch needs replacement. :p

The fact he is complaining about the clutch and it has never been changed combined with the high mileage makes me think that maybe a new one is needed soon.

Normally when a clutch wears out you get the exact opposite symptoms from the OP. You normally would struggle to pull off or move at all and the engine will freely rev without you changing speed (much).

It wont have more grip so much so that the car stalls!

OP just needs to get used to the new clutch :)

this is exactly what happened when the clutch wore out of my vectra

You would change gear between say 5th and 6th, and when applying the power the revs would jump because the engine was just free revving.

You had to ease off the gas, let the clutch bite and then re apply power gently

When it finally gave up the ghost, i could move between neutral and 1st without the use of the clutch and without it stalling.

Sounds very much to me as though you just need to get used to a new car.

For the record, my 136k mile S60 is still on its original clutch with no sign of slipping yet.

sweet my old v40 never had a clutch change and that was at 140k

If you can put your foot down in 5th / 6th and the revs dont shoot up

the clutch isn't on its way out.

That's one of the first signs of clutch slip.

My 132k S60 D5 is still on it's original clutch and DMF, not quite sure how much longer it's going to last but it's had a fairly easy life over the last 6 years I would imagine.
