I have a [email protected], 16gb ram@1500, and recently swapped a gtx 460 768mb to a gtx570 1.3gb.I can now run 95% of my games at 1080p with max details and 4aa no problems. However 3 of the games are still very much CPU bound, GTA4, ARMA 2, and Crysis.

Ive read unconfirmed reports around the net that theres a big difference in these games going from a phenom to sandybridge, can anyone verify that?GTA4 can drop to 25fps in places (avg around 40), arma 2 in big towns down to 20, and crysis still feels a little sluggish.

Im aware neither ARMA 2 or GTA 4 are coded particularly well and crysis is a system hog but I cant shake the feeling that an i5 or i7 sandybridge might make a big difference.Anyone have any experience with a phenom and sandybridge in this scenario?Worth upgrading? Its annoying having 1 part you feel is letting you down and the money spent to cure the minor annoyance to most would be worth it if indeed the differences are noticeable :)

I also use After Effects so the Multi Threading would be a bonus, although I currently dont have problems with the speed on it.

I can confirm that going from a 3.6ghz phenom II X4 to a 2500k @ 4.4ghz had a big difference for me. Before i bought my 2500k i was looking around the net trying to see if there would be a nice difference but I couldn't get a straight answer. So when i did upgrade to sandybridge I was thinking I might not see much of a difference, but when loading up GTAIV and Crysis, especially Crysis wars I was nicely surprised to see a nice boost in fps, smoothness and higher minimum fps in those 2 games. I havn't tried Arma2 as i don't have it.

I know yours is a 6 core, but probably wouldn't be too much difference compared to my X4.

Stick with what you have ATM. Crysis should run fine on your rig as I know people with older AMD and Intel CPUs who are fine at 1920X1080.

The other two games are just poorly coded so spending loads of money is just pointless IMHO.

Next year AMD and Intel will be releasing new CPUs and I would consider getting on of these instead.

BTW,what PSU and motherboard do you have?? Some older 800 series motherboards are supposed to be compatible with Bulldozer.

Thanks, Im getting the impression though Arma 2 and gta wont run to the standard i want unless i went with a i2600k and a multi gpu, which I dont want.

You are right about crysis, I turned down the motion blur and oced the card a little more and it runs well now, GTA runs well enough but annoying drops in framerate.PSU is a 650 watt thermaltake, the motherboard is this, I dont think it supports AM3+

The motherboard will not support Bulldozer it seems:

Another thing is that your motherboard only has a 4+1 phase VRM. It could be quite possible that the motherboard starts throttling under heavy sustained load.

I would try the games without the overclock.

Hmm, which program would be able to tell me if it is throttling?Something that runs in the background while gaming would be ideal
