HTC just threw two new Windows Phone handsets down on the table and politely requested that we be impressed. The high-end Titan (previously leaked as the 'Eternity') is indeed an awe-inspiring brute, wielding a 4.7-inch SLCD display, 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing snapper to take full advantage of Mango's newfangled Skype integration. Its over-sized guts include a single-core 1.5GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and up to 16GB of fixed flash storage.

Meanwhile, the Radar (which also recently leaked out as the 'Omega') comes significantly less pumped in order to meet a lower price point and -- we suppose -- the expectations of a more mainstream audience. It can be seen as an updated Trophy, with similar weight and dimensions, plus the same 3.8-inch LCD, 1GHz processor clock speed, 5MP rear camera resolution, RAM and maximum 8GB fixed storage.

The key upgrades involve the cameras: HTC says it has an improved 28mm wide-angle lens on the rear, plus of course there's the front-facer, which is unfortunately only VGA. Although HTC intends to update its existing WP7 range to Mango starting in mid September, the Titan and Radar will be the company's first innately Mango-fied devices when they arrive in early October.

I like these, but I wouldn't say they are HTC's finest hour when it comes to phone design... :o

I can't help but think the Samsung devices are going to be considerably better.

The top device, i dont like the look off, the bulk at the bottom of the handset itself, beneath the buttons? Why so much space?

Also they all follow the same similar architecture it seems (from my view anyway).

I'd also say that the samsung devices will steam ahead, as of the current success of the SGS2 :).

The titan looks quite nice, except for the massive screen. The omega on the other hand better be selling for cheap because it really isn't anything special, I'd assume its essentially the wildfire S for WP.

why oh why are they only putting upto 16gb of storage in it though! Hopefully the Samsung's and Nokia's will be a bit more innovative.

internally the specs of the Titan seem quite nice bearings mind this is WP rather than Android and doesn't need the extra power because of this, for most things at least.

1.5ghz single core, 512mb ram? What's with the rather 'modest' hardware? No duals? No lolhowmuchramcanweputinaphone?

Does Microsoft not allow anything better?

WP7 doesn't really need anything better. Unlike Android which appears to need dual core just to run smoothly most of that is needed only for 3D games and other such large apps and I think the actual graphics chips should be nice and powerful for this.

Internals wouldn't really concern me at all when choosing a WP7 device (camera/screen/battery aside), even my Omnia 7 feels more fluid than most dual-core Android devices for example.

I guess hardware lockdown has it's advantages then. If my local warehouse of phones for use in cars had one for demo I'd love to try it out but alas it's mostly crapberry and iphone. :(

Not another large screen/small battery combo HTC :( Looks well built though.

WP7 mango only using S1/S2 snapdragons is very disappointing for this current climate. It's not just the extra core, the latest dual core SoC's offer much more features on general.

Here's a good example...
The Titan uses HTC's newest 8MP + 28mm/f2.2 camera module, the same one found in the new and highly rated myTouch 4G Slide.
Unfortunately it won't have the 4G Slide's zero shutter lag technology, timewarp, 1080p and the extra features enabled by the S3 snapdragon. (Impressive stuff)

If any company needs to compete on specs it's Microsoft right?

..and what's all this Android rubbish again? Yawn, we all know Android can run perfectly well on slow hardware.

I can't speak for the internals of these phones but my Mozart has an interface as smooth as butter. After my N900 (loved that phone) and San Francisco (loved and loathed that phone) my Mozart and WP7 in particular are fantastic.

I just hope the Mango update, I think we get that on the 15th, doesn't screw up the user interface, anyways these just look like your typical HTC handsets, lets face it you can only do so much with a rectangular shaped device. I think the software is the most important part, what can it do or allow you to do? beyond that the hardware isn't that important as long as it will allow the software to do its job... my tuppence worth anyway.

J.

I'm really looking forward to this, hoping it launches smoothly :) AFAIK WP7 is pretty much solo threaded in execution, I doubt it would gain much from a duo.

My Omnia 7 running mango is by far the smoothest UI I've ever had the pleasure of using so I wouldn't be worried about the specs of these phones at all :)

The reason WP7 is soo smooth is because its interface is hardware accelereated.

Something that all android handset oems don't do bar the SGS2 - which is as smooth as you like.

I think the Mali-400 is an ARM designed GPU which samsung have actually bought the driver for.All other gpu makes haven't incorporated the driver/code for gpu acceleration.

Windows 7 mobile is doomed to stay a niche market thanks to Microsofts lack of marketing. The average Joe won't even know what Mango is let alone what windows mobile 7 is. They've made a slick interface so why not push the advertising? It's the reason apple are so popular because they spend so much actually showing off the product.

I went to the Tech Ed 2011 Microsoft show the other week and in their technology section they had an old Asus phone showing off Mango hidden behind some laptops and that was it. If I hadn't known about Mango I wouldn't have gone looking for it as there was no big stand promoting the new phones at all. The phone actually dissapeared after day one and there wasn't any Mango on display after that.

If MS want mobile 7 to be popular they will simply have to start paying for advertising and promoting it. At the moment it feels as if they've gone "Meh here's the new phone" when it was first launched then forgotten about it.

This, also Microsoft should sell them in Microsoft stores bundled with laptops or other microsoft products for a discount price.

Also there are no microsoft stores in the UK???

I haven't seen an advert on television for WM7.

Hardly any mobile phone stores have the handsets on display.

The prices for the apps are sometimes ridiculous compared to the equivalent iOS/android app.

1... THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "WINDOWS MOBILE 7" or "WM7"! Maybe that's why you haven't seen any evidence for it? ;)

On a more serious note I think there are two main reasons for this. Firstly Mirosoft shouldn't necessarily be the ones advertising it (for example how much has google paid to advertise Android?). Most advertising will be done by hardware manufacturers and networks. Problem is that means WP doesn't get much advertising. Secondly I think the first year was a "beta" test more than anything. A few of the bigger manufacturers releasing phones to sell to a few people to make sure everything is running smoothly for the masses, get some phones actually out there with normal people and get a few apps made.

This autumn on the other hand will probably be different. With Nokia producing a number of handsets and more manufacturers coming into the WP7 fold there will be more phones and more exposure. That alongside rumors of MS sharing advertising costs with handset manufacturers and another big push by MS themselves will hopefully get widespread recognition.

I reckon at least with some Nokia Phones there may be a few dedicated displays popping up to compete with iPhone displays as well.

EDIT: Apparently MS had a $500m advertising fund for WP so I can only hope that most of it has been saved for this year?!

I see adverts for w7 all the time on the tv and in mags. Some feature OEMs, some don't. I've never seen a phone 7 ad, anywhere. I wouldn't mind betting that they will put the effort in with windows 8 when it comes out for phones, tabs and pc's.

how many android adverts have you seen? Normally the only place I see "android adverts" is in adverts from networks and shops and they don't specifically mention OS either. That's also where most WPs can be seen.

I've seen a few, most have been while tuned into American tv channels and their Motorola droids.
Unlike android, wp7 sort of needs to work on its market share. :p
