League of Legends or Heroes of Newerth

I like HoN because Silhouette is the coolest hero in all the Dota genre, but it's so unfriendly for colourblind players that it's hard for me to play. So I mainly stick with LoL as I have an awesome colourblind mod installed.
I played LoL pretty much since release on and off, it's a fun game and is definately easier to learn than HoN and it's more simplified. I would recommend playing LoL for a while and grasping that then if you feel like you would like more to do then give HoN a go but as others have said the HoN community is awful!

Heroes of Newerth. LoL is a disease of a game if you want to move into Dota 2, you will learn a lot of bad habits and playstyle.
League of Legends is based on casual players who just like killing other players, the only reason it has a 'competitive' scene is because the amount of money Riot have backed into tournaments.
Playing HoN will grant you better knowledge of items, heroes and mechanics which will help you switching to Dota 2!
For reference, I'm not saying LoL is a terrible game, It's a pretty fun game but it's a disease for any person wanting to switch into Dota 2.

Hehehehe see how not a single person has slated HoN yet all the HoN players instantly hate on poor little LoL... jealous much? 
Well they have a point in that playing LoL won't help you play DotA in any way as it doesn't have denying and is generally simplified. For me that's the exact reason I love it though since I can get a group of friends together for some games without having to spend ages teaching them all the game mechanics.
