My rough system spec.
i5 2500k @ 4.7Ghz 1.4v
GTX 570
Fractal 1000 case
Artic Cooling Freezer 13

So the 1.4v is the only way I can run my i5 at 4.7 stable. I don't mind keeping it there but the problem is cooling. In prime my cpu will top out at around 90c :O however in crysis 2 it will top out at about 70c.

I'm looking at keeping it a bit lower than that if I can.
So my first thoughts were to get a decent cpu cooler as this Freezer 13 is garbage :/

I'm thinking either:
Akasa Venom Voodoo £42.98 ocuk
or
Thermalright Silver Arrow £50.99 ocuk

Couple of problems though. Since I have a small case I might have trouble getting these in and even if I could: would they do any better than what I have currently due to the constraints of my Fractal 1000?

Am I better off getting a new case and cooler? Or will the cooler alone be sufficient in my case? Case wise I'm thinking Corsair 600T maybe if I have to go down this road.

Pic below to see the squeeze :(

Your thoughts? :)

From what i hear the silver arrow is a decent cooler. I posted a link earlier in the overclocking thread about coolers and im currently using a thermaltake frio. In the link i posted the frio actually beats the silver arrow not by a lot but maybe 2-3c. Worth a look if you want to try something different.

When i OC my i5 ill let you know the temps :)

I have thought about the frio but from what I read it's quite loud and has now pwm control on the fans :( which is also what put me off the corsair A70.

The only way a Frio would beat a Silver Arrow is if you ran the Silver Arrow with NO fans

Case might be a good place to start IMO, I have the Freezer pro 13 (slightly larger rad and a bottom mounted 50mm fan over the regular F13). Clocked a 2600k @ 4.7ghz, floating around the 1.4v mark and my load temps hover in the mid 60's, occasionally peaking towards 70c. My case is just a cheap NZXT Gamma (hope to replace soon, probs with a white 600T) but it has 2x140mm top mounted fans exhausting near the cooler which should help.

If your not keen on a new case, or a large air cooler, perhaps something like the H60 would be a better fit: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-006-CS

Actually! Does the Silver Arrow fit sct 1155? Or does anything that fits a 1156 fit a 1155?

Yup, same pin holes on 1156 as 1155, so any cooler tagged as fitting 1156 will fit 1155. Some product descriptions and packaging have yet to reflect this.

Just upgraded my case and cooler last weekend.

I was using a coolermaster wave master and stock cooler on an i5 760. I was hitting temps of 55C at stock speeds.

upgraded to a Corsair 600T (white) and an H60 cooler, it now running at 35c underload with the clocks at 3.8Ghz and idles at 15c, so a massive thumbs up for the case and cooler combo from me. The panel is an optional wire mount for 4 fans or a plastic window, you get both.

Edit

I've using this forum for so many years for info, that i didn't realise that this is my first post....so Hi everyone

Well done on the first post :D

I think I'm definitely going to go with the silver arrow but a doubt it will fit my fractal 1000. Either way I'll buy it anyway and if it doesn't fit I'll buy a case to suit.

Now case wise I've gone off the idea of the Corsair 600T for a few reasons but I spotted this FT02R-W from silverstone :O with three air penetrators in the bottom. Price wise it's shocking but the performance of the Air Penetrator is quite impressive.

Thoughts anyone?

I know it's an expensive case so whats out there case wise that is roughly equal or better performance for less money? I can't run my i5 at 90deg for very much long and it kills me to have to down clock it back from 4.7 :(
