My better half and I are visiting Edinburgh in late October, and having never been before I was wonderering if anyone could recommend a decent hotel? It's always nice to have some recommendations rather than just trawling through various websites.

Also, any insider tips or knowledge on Edinburgh itself would be much appreciated too.

Thanks in advance.

I like the Holiday Inn at Edinburgh Zoo, they quite often have 2 nights for the price of 1 too and comes with access to the gym/swimming pool and sauna.

Definitely budget dependant, but I'll put in a shout for the Missoni. Excellent hotel, think it won the European hotel of the year (or something along those lines). Stayed in it a few times and one of my favourites in Edinburgh.

Ah yes, budget. It's wide ranging really. I'm not a lottery winner, but equally I don't want to stay in a run of the mill type of place.

Does it have to be a hotel? There are some excellent B&B's in and around the city which often work out cheaper. We stayed here last year during the festival. Just a short walk into the city and has guest parking which is a bonus.

No it doesn't actually, a B&B would be spot on because I imagine we'd be eating in restaurants each night. 'Hotel' was just the first word that came to mind!

Thanks for the recommendations so far :)
