AMD 7000 series details leaked

xdr2 memory, maybe rambus will shine once more.
those specs seem quite believable, only things i personally find a bit surprising is the 190w TDP for the 7970, but i suppose even that is not completely unbelievable.
interesting to note that 2Gb ram on the midrange cards as well this time round.

Don't forget that XDR2 uses some 33% less power for the same bandwidth as GDDR4, so the same card with gddr2, would probably be 210-220W potentially.

Considering there are two leaks today, and both say different things, though similar for the 7970/50, one leak has the 7870 as GNC and another has it as still VLIW4.

A certain someone has been suggesting for a couple weeks that the 7970 is going to be a little shy of 6990 performance.

so they do :) I didnt notice that.

on the XDR2 memory side of things, im sure if the leaks are true and they are using it, there will be advantages to doing so, else they wouldnt have bothered, we can just hope that it isnt much more expensive than GDDR5, the last thing we want is prices to shoot through the roof.

and i just bought a evga 570gtx 2.5gb :( but i don't mind. as long as ATI don't support stereo on nvidias 3d monitors.

2gb ram on top end cards does seem a little bizzare, agreed. Funnily enough I just went trifire 6970/6970/6950 and am not disappointed by the speculations on the 7xxx series as I always knew they would be better but I am sure the price is going to be fairly epic at the same time - thinking £350+ for a 7970 or maybe more? I guess the price of the 69xx range will come back down to normality but still don't expect to see 6970s for less than £225 new.

Hopefully my investment was worth it ><

what is xrd2 and how does it compare to GDDR4 and 5?

not too clued up on these things

i'm hoping the 7870 will match the 6950 for performance, but be cheaper, cooler and quieter due to the process shrink

It's not going to be cheaper imo :(

GDDR5 ranges from 3.5-8.5ish in gb's, as in thats what it was designed for. XDR2 starts at 7.2 and goes to 15-16gb's, so GDDR5 is basically at its limit now and XDR2 is at the start. Pinout is 120 vs 174 for gddr5(can't quite remember if the gddr5 one is right, its quite a bit higher though) and xdr2 uses roughly 33% less power for any given bandwidth.

XDR2 will likely cost a bit more but no more than gddr5 cost when that started production and they'll save in other costs, gddr5 would likely need 384bit bus to hit the same bandwidth, which would increase diesize and cost quite a bit, and the pcb cost as more pins=more traces and more problems.

Definitely agree Vram should have been 3GB, & I'm surprise they are still using a 256-bit memory interface, & not 384 bit or 512 bit memory interface, even though it may add a little more to the costs.

can someone link to the other leak? i can't seem to find it

also, what's the story about the 7970 vs 6990, can you link to that too?

thanks. i'm gonna be using a friends 5770 in my new build (come SAAS payment) until the new generation comes out, so i'm trying to find out as much as i can about it
