Just been demoted in my work place :( Need Advice

Am I correct in thinking past incidences don't count as the data is question is only from one PC, the incident when your friend was court. Unless they have proof about past discretions can they do anything about them? Surely it is only this incident, in which you did not take the data offsite.

By the sounds of things he admitted to taking data off site :(

should have just said i delete the data before going home, then when a manager asks for a recovery you say sorry cant do it i have no backup because you have refused to supply me with equipment;)

I work from home with access to loads of customer data, nuff said.

zOMG the data is offsite, nuff said.

are you self employed?

do you have permission to take the data away?

it's easy to scoff, but small time to organised crime would love to get hold of customers data.

What I find shocking is the numbnuts in charge allowing this to happen.

I'd forget your job (who can survive a 1/2 pay reduction?) and go public with what you have been doing, implicating as many people in the place as possible. I'm sure several newspapers would be very interested in hearing a company that big advocates the use of personal unencrypted (presumption) HDDs to store customer data.

Come off it tbh, The guy was going off his own back to do a good job and he got kicked in the teeth for it. Ok data off site not great, but a quiet word and the guy asking for the tools to do his job correctly in the future was all that was needed here.

You work for DSG I assume. From my experience they are a horrible company to work for.

So, they are asking you to do data recoveries but not supplying you with the tools to do said data recovery... sounds just like them

I hope you get this sorted.

When you jack the job in which IMO is going to happen after being shafted like that, I think you should create a MASSIVE www.overclockers.co.uk banner outside of one of their branches.

Should go down well tbh.

If your managers have asked you to do this type of work it could be classed as commonl practice which supersedes that of your employment contract.

If you have the proof you say you do, appeal and if that doesn't get you reinstated file a grievance against your management. If that fails you have grounds for an employment tribunal.

thx Pretty much what I thought but then I am that poor bugger !

Im gonna keep my witness statements from my department and managers hand written notes asking me to do data recoveries instore.

I can even state to them do a data forensics test on my hdd to even see if the customers data was used or alterted or copied, they wont find any evidence of it anyhow.

Lets be totally open and honest here. You weren't "accidentally" taking that data home, were you? I'm betting you, like me, were very curious as to what was on those hard drives. Perhaps some cool stuff like a bit of warez or summat. Or that holy grail of tech support: nuddy pics of the wife.

Either way, they are still harsh to expect you to perform backups without giving you a er.. backup.

Yup I wasnt gonna use the hand written notes my managers left me to deal with customer issues stating to run data recoveries, I figured the wittness statements would be enough but ill take them along with me in the appeal.

Its a weird situation, yes can admit to making a mistake but it was still due to managers and work situation.

Im prepared anyhow to move on, its quite clear the retail industry is going south with this recession and best buy will proberly buy them out. My role as PC engineer finished with them a few months ago and ive been left doing 3 engineers work load as well as Customer Service duties, think I need a break from all the madness :D

I was gonna use the line in my appeal you can run a data forensics on the data, which would proove its not even been accessed or opened/copied etc...
So no I would never do that, dont even have the time frankly.... am lucky if I can even get to have a lunch break and eat during the day in that place lol

I think you should be grateful you've still got a job.

Bringing tools into work is probably OK, taking data home certainly won't be.

o rly ;) Doesn't happen :D

We did once have strippers book there machine in for a healthcheck, I do remember when they gave there address our terminals were able to come up with the exact name of the strip club Rhinos to which all the strippers had a giggle over.

I was unable to get close to the machine since several managers and engineers were attempting to complete the healthcheck at that point.
