Police should commute in uniform

I think this stinks. Why? It's a cheap con to get free overtime out of the Bobbies.

Everyone here would be outraged if they were asked to give free over time, so why should Police Officers oblige?

If you want to know the real problems Police face, lets start with the fact that they are forgotten as people, and remembered as uniforms. Police Offices are people, just like the rest of us. They have lives of their own to live, they can't be on duty all the time.

Sorry if already posted/discussed. The OP and this "think tank" (get a real ****ing job you lay about armchair generals) had me raging with his sheer narrow mindedness and I quick posted.

Why not have them wear their uniform out of working hours and on their days off as well?

Terrible idea, shouldn't even have been suggested, let alone be considered.

I've got an idea: why don't the Tories not cut police budgets? Then we wouldn't need this stupid plan.

But that would be ignoring the bulk of the report (as opposed to focusing on one somewhat out there recommendation) that highlights just how much excessive spending and timewasting is going on in our police service.

Is there really any justification whatsoever for paying warranted officer rates for jobs that have absolutely no requirement for a warranted officer?

Absolutely awful idea. If the officer wants to he should be offered some reward for doing so (albeit small). Shouldnt be mandatory though for reasons stated before.

Dam what idiots to do this would endanger the police officers and the family's also what about home privacy? Police officers are people and should be entailed to privacy like everyone else.

A better idea would be to get the 13 thousand apparent officers that have made no arrests in the past year (I believe) off their behinds.

Even if it means employing civilians for the paperwork for most things, its still a better solution than useless officers.

Cant blame the officers for being tied up in paperwork. All the nicey nicey bullcrap and redtape they have to do is stupid. 99% of police officers would prefer to be out on the streets but due to the way things are that is no longer and option for them. This is one of the reason I left.

You can when the officers are doing roles that are only paperwork...

Some might say yes as a police staff member has a lawful right to strike. Police do not.

It is in the minds of senior officers, especially in departments like communications.

So the criminals can follow them home? No, rubbish idea.

It's not like criminals aren't clever enough to recognise police when leaving the station without a uniform.

Such a ruling might weed out all the cowards and petite women who have joined the 'force', what good is a copper who is scared of the repercussions of an arrest? it's no wonder criminals have the upperhand these days.

Some of these roles require a constable to carry them out and cannot be given to civilian staff. Granted that not all of them do but a large percentage require the people that do them to be cops.

I cannot read your FT.com link as I am not subscribed but I would hazard a guess it won't mention the office based roles that need a cop to do them.

Absolutely ridiculous idea and for those of you who think it's a good idea how many of your neighbours know what you do?
Some people are going to find this hard to believe but my OCUK persona is not my real life persona.
I've lived in this street for 27 years and know most of the close neighbours and not one person knew what my job was when I worked at a factory for 27 years because I didn't want knocks on the door asking me to fix appliances.
Absolutely no one in this street knows what my job is now and only a couple of close mates know.
Once again not one of my neighbours know I play in rock bands at the weekend and when I worked at a factory of 2500 workers only about 10 knew and I asked them not to tell anyone.
It doesn't matter on here because none of you know me but in real life I don't want neighbours/friends knowing what I get up to and I'm pretty sure no copper wants the world to know.
Ridiculous.
