Had a deabate with my cousin about this, he prefers the new one, over the original 2000 version, im not so sure, im in early doors on the new game, great game so far no doubt, but against deus ex ? theres a reason why the original won so many awards, and was voted best pc game of all time, what are your thoughts on this ? any other huge fans of the original ? i still play it to this day, just shows that gameplay beats superior graphics

I like both for different reasons. Neither does everything better than the other.

They're generations apart so I don't think I want to compare them really, they're both great in my eyes. :)

Without a doubt Rollerball, recently started it up again, glad the cd still works after 10 years, currently playing through it and the new one, can probably be got now very cheap and it works well on windows 7, don't expect anything spectacular in the visuals, but the gameplay is where its at baby !

Dues Ex everytime. Its just jam-packed with gameplay and decisions you make frequently result with notable consequences.

Just being able to kill a 'boss' without even fighting them, or run away like a coward and fight them another time is just one of many example of this.

I can't decide which is better, HR has better graphics and lots of card board boxes to pick up and Ex has fantastic game play.

Actually while i do prefer the original HR a pretty good game.

IMO, although I enjoyed HR, it can't touch the masterpiece that the original was.

TBH, too much of the new game felt like a watered-down by committee set of safe options.

For instance: the fact that you can upgrade pretty much everything, and certainly everything worthwhile without much bother. The original really forced you to choose by closing off augmentation options depending on your choices. A much better system that really linked different builds and play-styles well.

The background world and plot was much deeper as well, as were the choices you have to make. You really had to pay attention to the dialogue to suss out the details and consequences then. Also, the locations/hubs were more varied and interesting. Too many identikit offices/corridors in the new one. Also Hong Kong >>> Hengsha.

The multiple endings were handled much, much better in the first one. There were consequences for your actions in the last 1/4 of the game or so, not just "push button A for ending 1". Bah!

The voice acting was better this time around by a far chalk, mind. Though I did prefer the original sound-track, and was disappointed not to hear it reprised.

Oh, and too much hacking! Far, far too much. And far too many identikit computers in identikit offices on identikit desks to do the hacking on!

The first DE still stands as a modern meisterwerk, and the new one, good as it is, can't compete.

IMHO, of course.

I liked HR until the bosses which frankly ruined the game, as a pure hacking and stealth player it was ridiculous to have to go toe-to-toe with bosses

HR got as close to the original as any modern game will - gaming has changed considerbly since the first game was released.

I personally liked HR, not more or less than the original.

As for the bosses, I played hacking/stealth and had no trouble with them. Would have been nice to have an alternative route though.

Flatlander Woman

I could never figure out how the hell you got to Hermans killphrase. I remember doing it the first time I played it through, lots of infolink conversations with the tech guy when you're going through the Knights Templar Cathedral but since then every time I tried it it never happened.

HR needed more varied locations. I mean you had Hells Kitchen, underground tunnels, an airfield, a secret MJ12 base, Hong Kong, Versalife labs, then you were all over the place in a French city and catacombs and then off to sink a gigantic super freighter, stop an attack on a random research base, save a hostage as an abandoned gas station, infiltrate an ocean floor lab (Pancheea always reminded me of that...) before heading over to a missile base and then area 51.

If you could get the better social enhancement and touch up the AI and combat and re-work the augmentations of DE1 to the style of DEHR you could have an awesome game.

Yeah, the mash-up comic vid posted earlier gave me a glimmer of hope that someone would recreate the original in the new engine.

I've no idea if that's even possible, and even if it was, it would take years, but...

How can you compare two games 11 years apart? Side by side, HR is obviously a better game - should they have been released at the same time, HR would poop all over the original. It's just the natural progression of things. DX was great for it's time, but to say it's better than the new game because it was ahead of/better than other games also released 11 years ago is just nonsense. Don't compare.

Well, clearly you can't compare technical elements, what has become possible to implement in terms of game mechanics, graphics, etc.

But, in terms of plot, setting, dialogue, character development, player choice and the way it is handled, immersion, etc....

Well, I dunno, maybe you can't really compare those either over such a long period :)

It feels to me like you can, though, and it feels like the original scaled heights that the new version just doesn't.

Regardless, the debate kills some time on a slow Monday night, huh? :)

I dont know if you actually want me to tell you, so here's some spoiler tags in case you wanted to figure it out on your own :p

When you break out of MJ12 prison and into UNATCO, have a chat with Jaime Reyes. He'll offer to either run away with you now (and he'll give you an augmentation upgrade canister when you meet him in Hong Kong) or you can ask him to stay in UNATCO and be your spy on the inside (at which point you can meet him in a café in Paris, and he'll tell you he found a secret file with Hermann's killphrase: Laputan Machine

I prefer Deus Ex. Partly due to rose tinted glasses, and partly because I know that game inside out and the familiar feels nice, and partly because I feel it is a better conspiracy story than the new one is.

That said, they are both fantastic games, and as someone above said, this is as close as HR could get to the original without it feeling like you've paid £30 to play the same game again. Good job imo

They aren't comparable. If you played the original Deus Ex during its heyday then it's the far better game. Coming to it now, HR is far better.

I have the same thing with the *shock games. BioShock is highly rated, but I came to the series during System Shock 2 and have too many good memories wired into my brain about it that BioShock cant compete. I'm sure folks that played the original System Shock when it was current would disagree with me. Same with the Thief series really (although the Cradle saves Thief3)

DX:HR is an exceptional game in its own right, and a very strong contender for game of the year for me.

Recently been playing Thief II and System Shock II again. They really have stood up to the test of time in my opinion, riveting games :D

Other than Typhoon and Armor there's not much that helps you against them, they aren't that difficult to overcome.
