21ft croc captured alive

It couldn't be left alone as it's alleged "to have brought about the demise of a local fisherman about a month ago" if you read the article. At least they caught it alive and it can go to a zoo or something. If it had been a shark with a fondness for taking chunks out of people, it would have been hunted and destroyed.

What? A wild animal eating other animals in it's natural habitat so it can live? Heaven forbid.

I can't even begin to explain how much this disgusts me.

I know, how about you move to a remote undeveloped area with little infrastrutural framework in place, and THEN complain about the capturing of an ENORMOUS crocodile that had been munching members of your village.

Hmm...

Not to mention your point of a wild creature eating other creatures in the wild? Do we not have a right to defend ourselves in OUR habitat? What does it matter that it's slightly more sophisticated than the crocodiles rather brutal method of attack?

And finally it was captured not killed so I really don't see the issue here? Personally, unless it brought money into the region, I would have had it slaughtered.

Shock as pack animals band together to remove a predator?

K point made, but let me put it like this. If it had eaten, say, a few cattle (lets say our fishermen are farmers) would they have killed it anyway for "destroying stock"? I reckon so. If it had eaten all the fish in the river, would they have killed it anyway for "draining resources"? It's survival of the fittest an unfortunately the fishermen where working in crocodile territory.

The issue is that we consider ourselves superior to everything else. If it were the other way around, and one human was killing a few crocodiles we wouldn't think twice about it.

And finally, I think I would be less annoyed if they had it killed, at least that way they would kind of be doing something for the community. But no, they stuck it in a zoo to make themselves money.

I'm aware I instantly contradict myself by shopping at tesco and buying meat from an animal that has barely seen daylight, but hey, how else would you feed a nation like ours.

You're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine.

I still love how some people react to this sort of thing, actively hunting lots and lots of crocs (like with whaling) to the brink of extinction, yes, but a one off case, no.

KaHn

if it's survival of the fittest why protect the corc?

This is earth, it's all Human territory. :)

with the land you used to grow the crops to feed the animals?

If everyone was vegetarian we'd actually have more food than we do now, meat is tasty but inefficient.

Saving lives and getting money for the community is better for the community than just saving the lives

hahahahahahahaha our habitat

And here...we...go...

So it should be killed or put into captivity for acting normal in it's own environment?

Yes. Particularly if it has a tendency to eat people. It's all well and good saying "OH GOD IT'S CRUEL WON'T ANYONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" until, with humans and wildlife living side by side, several children do get eaten. At which point there'd be people on this forum then proclaiming "STUPID THIRD WORLD COUNTRY! WHY DIDN'T THEY REMOVE OR KILL IT THE FIRST TIME IT ATTACKED SOMEONE!".

But people in the UK don't get this as we don't tend to get eaten by wild crocs in our country all that much.

The 1,075-kilogramme (2,370-pound) male is suspected of eating a farmer who went missing in July in the town of Bunawan, and of killing a 12-year-old girl whose head was bitten off two years ago, crocodile hunter Rollie Sumiller said.

That creature is a liability to everyone.

And your point about survival of the fittest makes my point. Our survival in that region depends on us being able to neutralise the threats from creatings weighing over a ton!

All logic aside, even from a purely emotive viewpoint, surely you can appreciate how the impoverished community would feel relieved? Imagine been poor AND having the constant threat of a creature which if it attacks you, that you've no chance of survival.....

I totaly agree that the threat needs to be removed from an area where humans live. Why cant they move it to a nature reserve or an area where there are no humans.

From this quote "planned ecotourism park" makes me wonder how much of a park this really will be and what the quality of life for the croc is going to be like untill then..

by the size of thing, I would have thought a more fitting title would be '21ft crocodile allows itself to live in a zoo (for a while, until it decides to leave)' :D

Like all apex predators, there's something indefinably stunning about it. Millions of years of evolution boiled down to an organism that is pretty much perfect at what it does.

Yet can still be beaten by some backwater yokels with a net.

People are ****ing awesome.
