My dad was on a monthly contract with 3 and had an iPhone 4. Unfortunately he passed away a few weeks ago and I cancelled his contract. 3 said I dont need to return anything to them and his account is now closed. Ive still got his iPhone but a few people have said that 3 will block the phone so that it cant be used in the UK anymore. I cant verify this as my dad had a password on the phone that nobody knows so the only way I can find out is to wipe it.
Can anyone verify if this is true? Cheers.

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Your dad mostlikely had a passcode on it. This stops access into the phone. Sadly ive not read of a way to undo it. THe way to test it still works is to dial an emergency call to the talking clock or something.

Other than that plug it into your compouter and wipe it. THat should bring it back to factory settings.

Try and guess the passcode otherwise only way is to wipe it.

And I doubt they will block the IMEI, why would they? It's not stolen?

Wipe it, put a new sim in it and it will work fine, I put the cost of a sim on it :)

even if they block the imeii think they allow emergency calls so that wont work...

restore it is only option im afraid.. but if your dad sync it with pc you may get it sync again with out passcode.

Im ok with wiping everything as I dont want to go through my dads pictures and texts. I will have a go at wiping it. How do I go about doing this? Someone told me if you connect it to itunes you have the option of wiping it from there.

Sorry to hear about your loss :(

Should be simply plugging it in and then choosing restore, which will download the latest software if it's not on it, wipe the device and load that on.

Don't believe there are any special hoops to go through. Also can't see the phone being blocked at all and will work fine with a new sim in

Small bump; I bought a vodafone sim card and it says on itunes that the sim is not supported. The phone was previously on 3. Are iphones locked to specific networks? Do I need to get it unlocked?

Yeh, Jailbreak it then unlock it (iPhones are so much better Jailbroken neway)

What iOS you running? and what firmware is installed on the modem, Settings > general >about > modem firmware

I dont know mate, I cant even get into the phone.
I am an iphone n00b, can you explain how to jailbreak please? :)

Your best option is to order a free payg iPhone 4 micro sim from the three website and pay £15 to get it officially unlocked in under 48 hours.

Thats a good idea, cheers :)

Will it give me the details about unlocking once I buy the sim? I couldnt find details on the website.

EDIT - found it.
