Hey Motors,

Been looking for a long time for a car and i think I'm just too indecisive!

What i was looking for was a diesel Audi A4 1.9/2.0 TDI sport with colour coded bumpers etc

However after a little more research I have now decided a petrol wouldn't be out of the question as my commute to work is about 35 miles round trip.

I have found a nice 2003 Audi A4 2.0 FSI SE and i am curious as to what these are like. MPG seem good and comparable to a diesel at least.

Anyone have an opinion or experience with them?

What's the budget? I can only imagine that the 2.0 FSI is pretty gutless given that I find my remapped A6 2.0T FSI to be underwhelming.

Was interested in this until I saw the £4.5K budget... :sadface....

Im after an A4 S-Line Avant B7 model as a cheapo runabout and some Euro driving...

Whats the best engine out of the 1.9 diesel and 2.0 Diesel for ultimate MPG and Autobahn cruising?

Sorry for thread hijackx innit...

The TFSI and FSI engines return woeful economy, no where near comparable to diesels.

Fox - A6 considerably bigger than the A4 just like the 5 series is considerably bigger than a 3 series!

Crikey, thats ludicrous!

Im assuming they carried the same 1.9 and 2.0 diesel engines accross to the new model too? Performance must have taken a whack.

I was being sarcastic. With a car that is over 1.5 tonnes anyway, an extra 185kg isn't going to amount to much.

No, the 2.0T FSI in mine nets me around 33MPG on the combined cycle and 42~ on a good extra-urban (motorway) run. Seems reasonable to me in a car with 220~ BHP and 1.6 Tonnes of bulk.

Also, the physical dimensions between the A4 B7 platform and the A6 C6 platform are not hugely different at all.

Hardly a fair comparison with the new platform of one and old of the other!

How do you figure? Platforms get larger and heavier, so the fact that the difference is small between an older generation A4 and a newer generation A6 just makes my point even more relevant.

As for the engines, they are the same generation and the same tech.

Well for example, the 140bhp 2.0tdi which the A4 and A6 share have a difference of .6 of a second to 60 (9.8 and 10.4 respectively) so there is some disadvantage to that extra 185kg with that engine at least, the A4 2.0 tfsi has quite a respectable 0-60 of ~7 seconds, the Fsi is slower due to lack of turbo. With the Tfsi engines, you do get an ok fuel consumption, especially on a run, i found this in my A3 2.0 tfsi, which i might add, i seriously regret selling, best of both worlds i found. Out of all the diesel engines, i'd be looking at the 2.0tdi (170bhp version) for the best of fuel consumption and performance, or the 2.7tdi, (V6) (0-62 = 8.1s and 41mpg combined apparently).

^ I had a look at A4s recently at a similar pricepoint (£3.5k). I can assure you that he's not going to get a TFSI or 2.0 TDI 170 for £4kish. Those engines are just too new and don't realistically fall within this pricepoint.

It's 2.0 FSI or TDI130 for this sort of money, and in those circumstances, you have the choice of slow (2.0 FSI or even worse, the 2.0 130bhp non-FSI) with not particularly good fuel economy, or high mileage (TDI 130). I like this generation of A4s but you don't really get a huge amount of car for this sort of money at this pricepoint and suprisingly finding a good is a bit of a pain. Private is the way to go though. 2.0s are more common though and therefore cheaper to buy. In my view, the smart money would go on a TDI 130 Avant (the saloon is not very practical without fold down seats IMO) with a remap to follow, even if the 130 is known to be a bit smokey. If I had found a decent Avant Sport TDI130, I probably would have bought it but really you're looking at £5k plus for a good one.
