New Car - Audi RS2

Its not really is it. If you know you want an RS2, then you disregard what other "better" cars are out there because its a specialist motor, one that any potential buyer would have done his homework on and be passionate about purchasing.

I appreciate that, it just strikes me as a lot of money for a leggy multi owner example of an RS2, I'm not saying its a bad example but - to my mind - a pricey one.

I really fancy an e36 M3 one day for example or indeed an e34 or e39 M5... would I drop near £10k on either with 7 previous owners and 166k on the clock? absolutely not.

It depends on what the OP actually paid I suppose, I doubt it was the asking price.

And don't get me wrong, the OP has one hell of a car! of that I am quite certain. :)

Absolutely stunning, nice too see something a little bit different on here, with it not being a BMW etc.. ;)

Paying that much for something like that, as much as it is, it's unlikely to really lose anything.

None of those are as likely to turn into a proper classic like the RS2 will though, they'd almost certainly lose value where something like the RS2 will more than likely hold it, if not even appreciate over the years.

It was made in very limited numbers, especially so in RHD variety (180 cars according to wiki) and was a truly iconic car in Audi's history (not quite Quattro levels but still). According to the advert, this particular car was the first UK RHD car to be delivered too, another bonus on value retention.

An E36 M3 was just 'the next M3' and is not even remotely comparable as a purchase. To make such a comparison is to entirely miss the point of a car like the RS2 I feel.

edit - Love some of the facts on wiki too, 0-30 quicker than the McLaren F1 :p

I did have an (Autodelta) 147GTA, sold it to buy the S1 Exige - which I sold because it was just seriously hard work on anything other than a track. Much prefered my Elise, but thats a story for another time.

Re: the RS2 price. Yes, its expensive for a 15-year old Audi estate, but like any commodity, price is set by demand. Its the same reason a Porsche 964RS fetches over £60k when you can buy a plethora of (better?) 997's for a lot less.

In terms of Audi estates, I could have had an RS6 for less. For a few thousand more I could have bought an B5 (twin turbo) RS4, and I could have had a B7 (V8) RS4 for £20k, which is insane when its over 10 years younger. So why didn't I? And why are cars of its era like the M3 so much cheaper?

Its not scene tax, per se - its the rarity, the history, the marques involved the fact that at the time it was an utterly groundbreaking car. Bear in mind this had 315bhp, in 1994, when Porsches own 911 Carrera 4 'only' had 276 - the headlines of "Faster than a McLaren F1!" helped to catapult it into the history books.

Despite the fact that its not the pinnacle of driver involvement - it understeers, the steering is vague - the RS2 is the only fast Audi to have in my eyes. The newer models are far too 'shouty', with huge arches, massive exhausts and various bling, as well as being far more common and they lack that inexplicable something the RS2 has that makes you 'want' one, despite the obvious flaws.

Its a car-nerds car. You either 'get it' or you don't. Most of my mates don't, and thats fine, they can spend £10k on their Civic TypeR's, Clio 200's and VXR's. I'll stick with my old mans estate car.

Nice. Very nice.
I know it is flawed, but it is still a wonderful car to own/have owned.

Enjoy!

I might be a bit biased but there is nothing sweeter than the sound of an Audi 5 Pot Turbo :D

Be prepared for some hefty bills, that goes for the petrol as well! But in the end it's all worth it! :D

I did not know Porsche were involved with RS2. What did they contribute?

They overhauled the engine, brakes and suspension. They had considerable involvement, hence the Porsche element on the badge:

The RS2 was assembled by Porsche in the same plant that produced the 959. In addition to the mechanical changes there are a few Porsche bits on the car - the wheels, front bumper lights and door mirrors were all 911 parts for example.
