I have always been a console gamer since I got rid of my old pentium over 16 years ago and have recently built a gaming PC due to the to long lifespan of the current consoles. I hate low framerates and screen tearing.
I have always heard about the console and system wars and stayed away from them but what worries me is the fact that I can no longer buy PC games in my game store. They appear to have left the PC scene altogether due to such low sales from stocking products. Devs and publishers such as epic have also left due to piracy etc.
I didn't realise it was this bad since I came back to PC gaming but it's very clear that services such as steam and origin are the future with PC gaming but why has PC gaming taken such a kicking ?
I know blizzard sing about their inflated 11 million WoW numbers but we all know the real truth and when steam also sings about 4 million recently we also know that that is just people turning their PC's on as steam starts with windows and it's not exactly 4 million playing games. Deus Ex HR for PC claims it only sold 90K compared to 400Kt the xbox360 sold yet steam only ever shows a max of 35K played at peak. So why are the publishers even bothering.
Is there a real, substantial future with PC gaming or is the convergence of console gaming with all the services they now provide, the future ?

u wasted about 5-10 minutes typing that.

blah blah blah pc gaming is dead rubbush, aint the kids back at school at yet.

Online sales

The following is the reason for PC gaming

Trackmania 2
Starcraft 2
Crysis
Battlefield 2

Then there's the fact console games cannot be modded (I dont think?) look like ass and play with low FPS.

Where's the next gen of consoles, isnt it about time for Xbox 720 and PS4?

Depends on which games companies you ask that very same question. Ask any of the best selling games companies and they will say consoles come 1st.
PC ports are an after thought on the most part, bar a few exceptions.
How many bad console to pc ports did you see 5-10 years ago?
Most of the console ports from years ago always looked a lot better on the PC. They took longer to reach the PC but the extra time waiting was worth it.
Cant really blame the current situation on the PS3, the majority of the fault must be with the xbox 360.
Too close to a PC in build, too easy to make a game on 360 and it port over (laziness) to PC.
Some games ported over even have the FPS limited to 30 !! Its a trend that is growing with each new game released.
PC gaming will always have a place but do companies make enough money from the sales on PC? Expecially with the current economic crisis sweeping the world.
Safe money is on consoles, PC platform is a gamble that few companies can afford to take a punt on.

No-one claimed anything, these are the retail sales figures for the game, with digital distribution taking up the majority of the market for PC gaming recently as you even stated in your OP, the figures aren't ever accurate for PC.

Consoles = More accessible for everyone including teenagers
Teenagers take up a big chunk of the market, and since most teenagers parents can't afford a gaming PC, they settle for what they can, a console.

Just as an FYI, it's been stated that consoles are more likely to die out before PC's, since developers who want a quick buck will more likely develop apps for phones/tablets and facebook-type games since there is higher profits to be had with less development times. PC's will always be around, consoles may not, especially if Onlive or a similar service becomes big enough that games are easily accessible on a PC of any quality.

The reason why retail stores dont sell PC games anymore is because digital sales are taking over.

Something that I doubt works well on consoles. You can barely get any decent games on consoles that compare to the RPG / RTS / TBS genres on the PC.

No problems with Pc gaming been gaming over 20yrs also had Ps3 since it was released.
Good pricing on pc games means I buy a lot more than PS3 games.

Next you will banging on about the terror of drivers and imaginable grief of patches

Pc gaming is still great it always has been and it wont ever change

not as great as it used to be. 2004, 2005 when i first got into pc gaming. first games i played were the likes of fear, MOH pacific assault, rome total war, and there doesnt seem to be that same, consistant standard nowa days as there used to be. i.e. ****** console ports.
