Now I don't know about you but if someone asks you to do something even though you know you won't be able to do it, you would say no, right?

Or would you say I'll see what I can do.

Had an argument with my parents and they said if I say no to people, I won't ever progress in life and etc.

My argument is why can't I be straight with people, if I know I can't do it, I should tell them then and there otherwise I'll be wasting there time.

What do you guys think?

I think you should watch the Jim Carrey movie "YES MAN", it is the perfect solution to your "NO MAN" problems.

On a serious note, the idea is that saying no too much prevents you from trying out certain opportunities, and you will never know if you don't try. Thats the point your parents are trying to make I believe, you can't progress if you dont try, you cant progress if you dont say YES to certain opportunities.

In that case are you going to give me a million pounds and do my dirty work for me? Yes? Thanks a lot mate! ;)

The principle is there though - you say yes or no based on a case by case assessment of the situation at hand.

Its a film though, not real life, unless its based on a true story?

Yes but it represents your scenario perfectly, he went through life always saying no, and then was taught to say yes (to everything mind you) and that is when he realised that he must carefully select what to say yes and no to otherwise there will be far bigger problems.

People will love you if you always say yes, people hate to hear the word "no", everyone hates rejection :p. That was an important point in the movie, but he addressed that later on by carefully assessing each given situation and appropriately selecting a yes or no answer.

Some good advice on here, for some reason I have lazy days, where I don't want to do anything, other days I want to fix everything.

Is this normal?

What were you saying "no" to that caused the argument with your parents?

They're right in that you shouldn't say no to everyone. Doing favours for select people (like fixing their PC) means you can call them up if you need some help in future. Some people forget this unwritten rule and those are the ones to say "no" to ;)

I can't remember the last time I said no to somebody.
I have a real problem with it.

(waits for the give me £50 posts)

Give me £51.

See what I did there?

Seriously though, just say 'No' to people cause I am sure they will say it back to you just as easily.

I'm awful at saying no. My manager always asks me to do overtime, so sometimes I end up working 4 weeks on end because I can't say no :p
