BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Ohhhh myyyyy gooooodddd!!!! :D

I've noticed a lot of BT vans around town lately working on the PCPs and thought they were just playing about... just checked BT website and...

30th September :D :D :D  :D

PRAISE THE LORD!!!!

No cant see anywhere to change them? it says on the instructions to change to 192.168.1.100 , help please, lol

yes i mean ethernet, looked in the settings

If your using Win 7, goto open netowrk and sharing cntre, click on local area connection, properties, Internet Protocol 4, properties and you should find the manual option.

Infinity installed today. Was quoted 26.1 download, actual is 37.5 :D

My only gripe is that over wi-fi on a wireless-n network with a dongle supporting 150mbps, I'm only achieving 12mbps.

Any suggestions on how to improve this or ideas as to why it may be so low?

Chuck the Homehub and get a real router. :P

The Homehub 3 only supports a total of 130Mbps. So if that is shared between a lot of connections, your wifi connection can be slow.

For this reason I have a wireless router connected to the 1 Gbit port for me to use. Otherwise Homehub 3 is very stable.

The HH3 does 300mbs you have to set it to 40mhz mode in the router settings, it tells you that devices may not work ignore this all wireless devices will work fine.

DOH ! Had to change my install day as I messed up with the date, now due for Monday 12th :( Oh well ...
Posted 30th Aug.

Home from work to find a BT engineer calling card in hall, oooh great. Yes you guessed it they came out to install it even though I had rearranged it online via the reschedule appointment function and as posted above had selected the 12th Sept. New date the 22nd! Rang them up and after all the usual please hold rubbish I now have to wait 24hours to see if I can get it installed on the 13th. Deeeeeep sigh ......

OK after a few tests tonight.

A wired test using speedtester.bt.com gave me the 37.5mbps I had been quoted by the engineer. But as I can't use that test more than once an hour I am also using speedtest.net. Several tests on that all returned the same which was around 27mbps.

Wireless is a different matter. I'm getting about 7mbps download speeds (peak time) on my PC in the office and the hub telling me I'm connecting at 11mbps (annoying!). Testing on my laptop in the same room as the hub, I get much better download speeds of around 22mpbs and the hub telling me I'm connecting at 130mbps (much better and hence the downstream of 22mbps).

So I figure it's my wireless USB adapter which is this Edimax EW-7811UN Micro adapter. It could be the distance, but it's on the same floor, 1 room away and about 15 meters. It could be the walls (office is a converted garage). Maybe the micro adapter is struggling and I should try something else. Question is what to try?

I have 3 options:

  1. Powerline adapters
  2. Another USB wireless adapter
  3. A wireless PCI card

I'll try the powerline adapters if a new wireless doesn't work. So question really is PCI or USB? Then which 300mbps card/adapter to go for? Anyone have any experience with both?

By road I'm about 370 meters line length is closer to 400meters plus maybe 450.

My house is only a few years old and the normal cab is the same age, my line is nice 0.5 copper so that will have a positive affect on the line.

Since messing with the router settings I'm getting 9mbs on speed tests on the upload, was 8 before, I will have a play with the settings tonight to find out what caused the increase.

The line has been in sync for 15 hours now and not one crc error only a few fec, which I'm pleased about.

Surely it was switching off the modem then it re synching and getting a slighly higher profile?

No as when I did the update I unplugged the rj11 cable, pretty sure the upload speed increase is a direct result of opening up the modem.

The ip profile has been unchanged since install day
