BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

How do you get an actual date for the service?
Every checker i've tried just says its not available (my exchange is enabled and think it must just be the cabinet), with no firm dates or anything.
Driving me nuts!

:( My exchange was meant to get it on the 1st Sept 2011 but now delayed to 30th June 2012.

Going to leech off my cousin's Infinity net when I move back for uni though, any ideas when they're doubling the speeds to 80mb? Will the uploads double to 20mb as well?

date was on the clickable uk map for my area on BT's site and my towns on the list for 30th sep, all the cabinets have been installed.

Ask a BT engineer if you see one knocking about, thats what i did and he told me back in may its was going to be september.

hmm yeah probably the best idea- ive seen plenty of the engineers about so will try to get an answer from one
cheers.

BT engineer is coming Wednesday. Is there anything I need to know/should check/ask him when he gets here?

First 48 hours have been quite good. So far no problems and ssh tunnels remain connected over night, which is great news. This so far as suspected is far better than virgin because on virgin i can not get the same sort of throughput through ssh tunnels.

Do BT restrict how much you can download and throttle connection speeds for Infinity customers?

On option 2 or something, there's no download limit, users have exceeded 1tb and had no warnings or anything, truly unlimited. As for speeds, they do throttle speeds on some services like torrents at peak times, 5pm-12 midnight and all weekend, however there's ways around this as many users have come to learn.

The homehub3 has a problem deciding what speed to set the 10/100 Ethernet ports too. I can't afford a router so was thinking about getting a switch like the £15 TP gigabit switch. Never used a switch before is it a simple as I hope, connect to hh3 and connect to everything else?

Set the speeds manually on the local adapter of the computer.

Yes - connect the 1GB port to the new switch and everything will just work.

That's the kind of simplicty I was hoping for :D

Tried this a few times sometimes it works other times not, I made sure I used the known good cable from the GB port just in case, I tried all sorts of combinations that I could think of interms of resetting, deleting config info, changing when the cable was plugged in etc. It still seems random not to mention I have devices that can't be configured like the Xbox 360.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, this is a known problem with the HH3. If you keep rebooting it, it will work for a while and then drop the speed on the 10/100 ports til you have to reboot again. BT are supposedly working on a firmware update that MAY sort it out, but I'm not holding my breath.

I was thinking of doing the same as you, as the 1gb port seems to be unaffected, but hadn't got round to trying it as yet. Let us know whether it cures the problem, as I suspect it will.

My exchange went live last December but I still can't get Infinity. Are there any sites I can go to see when my cabinet is going to be upgraded? I remember seeing a spreadsheet over 6 months ago but the column for my cab was blank which meant no plans for updating it. I've sent several emails/letters to BT about this but I always get the bog standard reply of "sorry, just register and we'll let you know". For once I'd just like someone to be able to tell me what the score is. Is it down to planning permission or some other explanation? The Infinity cabs seem to be all over Chippenham apart from our estate (although there is one about 500m away from me).

Exchange date now showing as June 2012. I guess we’ll not see anything before 2013.

Don't worry too much about that as its is only a guide. Mine was the same, it went from December 2010 to March 2011, then September 2011, then back to March and then it went live seemingly out of the blue in May. :)

*Something like that anyway.
