Back to if 16gb is worth it: If your spending £500+ on the sub system, then for under £50 an extra 8gb must be worth it.

Even if single applications won't use it, then Windows 7 prefetch will use a fair amount of the rest, files buffered into Windows prefetch will access faster then any SSD you can buy.. On my rig with 16GB I've seen at little as 250mb showing free.

If you can afford purchase 16GB at the same time, this way you know it's matched memory, and likely from same batch.

How much did you pay?

Mines been shipped today, should have it by tomorrow or Wed. I know it won't make a shred of difference but hey, it's satisfied by upgrade urge for this year. :p From 8GB to 16GB and a GTX260 to GTX460 for a grand total of £79 seems worth it to me. :D

I need to start reading up about RAM drives...
 
I recently upped from 6Gb to 12Gb purely because of the cheapness of the RAM and really dont notice any benefit at all. Games only use up to 2Gb of RAM at most for example.
 
Just got home from work to find the ram had arrived. It is IDENTICAL to the ram already in my system, just installed it and windows boots up so much quicker now! OK seriously there is no difference at all :p but that's my upgrades done for another (hopefully) 2 years.
 
I currently use 8gb and has a single ssd vertex 3 120gb no other hard drive, no swap file and no problems either :P I play crysis 2, Deus ex and bf3 (when its out) and never have problems. As said above its probably worth going for 16gb if you have the money and nothing else to spend it on or if you use a lot of iD, gimp, ps, autocad, google sketchup etc
 
if you have 4 dimms, use 4 x 4gb modules for 16gb, but to be perfectly honest, 16gb is a waste of pcb, time and money. Most you would need for a gaming machine at the moment is 8gb... if you are running a workstation or a web designer etc or do a lot of converting for videos etc, then 16gb would be handy xD
 
What use could you possibly have, PC's can only get so fast, it's still going to take 30 seconds to boot and ages to do a file transfer on a standard Hard Drive. How much performance boost could you get increasing ram from 8 to 16, I highly doubt it's twice as fast

Playing games isn't the only use for the PC.

There are some serious uses which will work a lot smoother with more than 8GB of RAM.

It's not all about speeding up the PC.

Sometimes you just need more RAM to stop it getting bogged down.
