I have a KDL40X3000 which was a great LCD in its time.

Want to replace it for a 46" and go 3D. Been looking at the Samsung D8000 and Panasonic VT30, but I am apprehensive to go 3D, given that I hear "Full HD" passive Samsung Reald sets are out next year, and then there is non glasses 3D.

Is it worth waiting for better passive 3D?

I would be loath to buy a set at the minute based on it's 3D performance as I honestly think you will get very little use from it and will probably be wanting a new TV before 3D becomes mainstream enough in the home to worry about.

If you want a new TV go for the best performing 2D you can get and treat 3D as a bonus.

Theres a massive war on at the moment between Samsung / Sony and Panasonic and the rest.

People like LG are arguing that passive 3D (i.e. the polarised sunglasses you use at the cinema) is the way forward, while Samsung / Sony / Panasonic argue that the active shutter glasses are the way forwards.

The big 3 active crowd have just recently announced a deal to make all their glasses compatible with one single standard which is refreshing.

But the Active vs Passive debate is still on.

I wouldn't buy into an unfinished standard yet.

Active needs to be improved before ill jump onto (their) 3D bandwagon, we had to purchase a passive set because, simply, the active glasses give me and my family a massive headache after 15 mins. Yet passive does not.

When there's some free channels on freeview/freesat, or if BBC-HD offers regular 3D stuff like they did during Wimbledon, then it might be worth upgrading. But having to have Sky or use just Bluray puts me off.

I have been trying out loads recently as I'm going to buy one.

I spent some time looking at various sets, both 2D and 3D performance.

For me, there was only one winner. That was the LG 42LW550T. It was an outstanding set. HD pic was superb and 3D was bright and with no flicker or crosstalk and featherweight glasses, was a joy to watch. Forget all that rubbish about passive 3D losing resolution, You wont notice it at normal viewing distances.

I would have a look at one if I was you.

Had my 50gt30 for months and never used the 3d function yet, do not have sky 3d or any 3d movies, must test it out with the GT5 on PS3

Current LCD is still pretty good (was Sony's flagship few years ago), so I would probably not update for the sake of 2D for now. My next jump would be for 3D I think.

I do like the idea of the LGs, but I would like to wait for "full HD" passive 3D to see how that works

I bought myself a new TV few months back...HD LED LG37" NONE 3D TV.

I dont like the idea of having to sit wearing 3D glasses, plus I feel that its something best keeping for the big screen cinema.....I might be wrong but 3D is just something I feel will never be something we all have, unlike HD where most people have HD Box's.

Im pleased I got my LED TV and thanks to 3D my TV had come right down in price! :)

Thats the great falacy at the minute though most people in the UK still don't watch significant quantities of HD yet the TV
makers are already trying to move us all onto 3D something which is even further down the pipeline for the average TV user.

A couple of weeks ago while on holiday in London the wife and I were in John Lewis in Oxford St. While the missus was looking at handbags I slinked off to look at Tv's and found the LG42LW550T on display with the seven pairs of glasses included with it. I watched a demo which included various elements of 3D ie sport, film, documentary, music video, gaming etc and I have to say it blew me away and until then I was the worlds biggest sceptic, it was simply amazing!! I watched it for 30 mins and had to be dragged away. I couldn't fault that tv on any level, colour reproduction, blacks, sharpness and no crosstalk or ghosting. I am looking to buy one of these asap.

Oh and apparantly the Cinema 3D chip in the Lg 3D tvs can convert 2D to 3D so you can watch everything in 3D if you wish, though they do admit specifically created 3D looks better.:D
