EVGA Overheating RMA?

I know this is a long shot, but I've had my 8800GTS since 2008.

It's completely stock, but it's running so hot. Idling at 80c, sounds like a hair dryer during games.

I've read a few threads on other forums about people rma'ing old cards because of high temps. Apart from the overheating, the card works fine.

Is it likely they'll accept an RMA?

You'll have to ask them ;)

I suggest you take the cooler off and reapply the TIM. Not like it invalidates your warranty or anything :D

EDIT: also, 80 isn't that high. I'd be worried if it reaches 100 :p

I'm not sure what it reaches on load, but I'll check :p

I take it you have checked the fan etc is dust free?

As free as it can be, I rebuilt my tower yesterday and airflow is good, everything is dust free.

Oh holy ****! 80 idle!!!!
You mentioned games straight afterwards so I thought you meant during those?!

Deffo reapply the TIM. I'm fairly certain they'll accept an RMA but they'll just reapply the TIM, clean the fans out and send it back to you so you might aswell do yourself. Unless ofcourse, they give you a free upgrade :p

A free upgrade would be nice :D

I've sent a ticket to them explaining everything.

It's idling at 80c, I just tried ATITool and let the 3d render thing run, and I got an extremely loud squealing sound coming from the card

Temps were creeping up to 90c after about 5 minutes so I stopped it.

I'll see what they say.

Don't get too hopeful :D

Chances are, they'll just reapply the TIM. Only if it's completely borked will they give you a free upgrade as the 8800 probs isn't in production anymore.

Saves me doing it, I've ran out of TIM :)

I read on techpowerup that someone returned their 8800GTX because it was overheating, they sent him a 9800GTX.

Fingers crossed :p

They should send one of the new cards as close to the old one as possable dont know what that will be though as long as its registered to you?

If they do replace it, seems like the GTS 450 is the typical replacement for my card :)

however, they may just reapply the TIM and send it back. From what EVGA Nick said, they get the card, confirm there's no physical damage, then send a new one, then test the RMA card so you probs will get a free upgrade - enjoy :p

Well after speaking to their tech support, they've said it sounds like it needs replacing under warranty and have authorized an RMA. Sending it off tomorrow :)

Thanks everyone

Well it looks like they're sending the same card back :( Just gonna put it on MM and buy a new one.

Oh well :)
