ANyone done the one year visa thing?

I got a few grand saved up.

Thinking just going over to Sydney (Melbourne?) and seeing what happens?

Get some casual work, get a flat, hopefully some mates etc..

I dunno good or bad idea?

Although I'd personally go to America and travel to different States but that's just me. If you have no mortgage to pay, bills etc then do it. You only live once.

It's a great idea.
Been here for 6 months now and have loved every day of it.
A fortnight ago my girlfriend and I did a pretty big road trip from Perth to Sydney.

Some interesting things to read on that.

www.airasia.com will probably be the cheapest flights you can get. They fly from London to Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Darwin.

In regards to money, the more work you get over here the better. The cost of living is high, but so are the wages. Supermarket job earns you around $20 an hour.

Feel free to ask questions :)

I went there for 3 months on my gap year and had an amazing time. I would highly recommend Coff's Harbour and the hostel, Aussitel. Melbourne and Sydney were also fantastic; I spent a lot of time in both. I highly recommend them, get very drunk and meet some lovely ladies.

The whole atmosphere out there is fantastic, very laid back, and I really enjoyed that.

well what type of jobs can I likely get? Are jobs hard to find?

Easy to find flat, make decent mates, flatmates?

Should I go to Sydney?

cheers

OH DEAR GOD THE SPIDERS.

Be careful.

Haha, when I stayed in the Art's Factory hostel in Byron Bay (a great place) I found this by me in bed...seems a lot larger at the time! (that is me by the way, 2 years younger then)

Anything in particular you'd be after? There's lots of bar work, wait staff and stacking shelves. If you do bar work you have to get your RSA (Responsible service of alcohol) which is basically a one day course that costs under $100. You'd earn that back in less than a days work

Gumtree is pretty good for looking at a place to share. Lots things pop up all the time.
You can either organise it before you go, or spend a week or so in a hostel whilst you investigate.

Should I go to Sydney?

Totally depends on what you like.
If you're a city person who loves to do lots of things during the day or hit the town at night then yes.
I haven't done a huge amount of travelling in different cities so it's quite hard to compare.
Sydney is great though - cheap public transport so no need for a car.

I stayed for a few months in a small town in WA. Only about 3,000 people in it but such a lovely community. Like I said though, it depends on what you like and what you would like to see.

Deep breath here we go ..........

Sydney yes go there but don't stay long jobs are hard to come by and the pay is crap. Feel free to go there to see the bridge etc etc you can't go to Oz without doing that.

If you want my opinion head to Perth look in Victoria park or any other suburb of perth for that matter and get a job.

Once your "bored of Perth" head up the west coast of Australia best part of Oz in my experience. Get your bum to Broome see if you like it ( look up the wet season though ) if you do like it , get a job easy peasy up there if you put your mind to it. If broome is a little to remote for you head upto Darwin.

So your in Darwin use this place as a base for seeing the east coast or Indoesnia. The money you get paid in Darwin is stupid I got paid £15-£18 an hour for bar work:eek: Thats working on 58p to the AUD which it was when I was out there.

In a nut shell get your bum out there preferably with some experience of bar work get paid well, enjoy the sun and enjoy the ladies you'll meet.

Did I mention i'm jealous of you ?

Although i'm now happily married all because I got off my bum and went travelling.

Who ever said the world is a small place has not travelled

Ohh did I mention lonely planet forums is your bible for info. Those guys are awesome for advice.

Hostels all the way as well meet more people that way.

Did I mention GO FOR IT!

Interesting , never got to Canberra if you go to perth/Darwin I could point you in the right direction of jobs etc etc. Trust me if you need any more info.

100% if you go up to Darwin have a a lot of friends/contacts up there.
