New car time in the autumn, need something dull

Merlin, the current CRV isnt too boat like tbh, havent really pushed the 4wd tho, so cant comment!

Exeo isnt a bad car at all, good VFM, and tbh, it isnt as if the E90 is some fantastically magical beacon of moderness in terms of the interior, its a pretty dull affair with softouch plastics :p

If i were in your shoes, the exeo would win hands down, its always going to be better than a french affair and as good as the Mondeo/Insignia/Mazda 6.I'd say a Accord, but they are too expensive for what they are.

I have a more depressing option...........Avensis, or slightly less depressing, Auris, hybrid thingymagig, one of my cients has gone for one, replacing his 318d m sport.

Company car life is dull, our works car park is filled with 520d's all in silver or grey, quite depressing to see my future, i miss my ST3:(

Even allowing for the damn 4 pot diesel, the F10 5 Series is one of the finest all round cars on the road today. It's so much better than a Focus I wouldnt even know where to start. Your future is bright.
 
But it going into the depressing world of grey suits and grey hair.Fantastic machine, but my god its a dull old grey world when everyone drives the same car! Whilst the ST was just a focus, at least it still made me smile.

Whats duller is the realisation that im going to need a MPV as my next car, damn i hate growing up:p

Wonder what a Q7 will look like with a nice decorative tissue box in the rear :p

FWD does not work miracles. If you wish to drive down an ungritted farmers lane in the snow and ice then have fun digging your front wheel drive Passat or whatever out, because it's going to be almost as useless on summer tyres if you really do need to brave these sort of conditions.

Just come back from Germany where they really *do* get snow and despite the fact they have been available for years and years I noticed only a single XDrive 4wd BMW Saloon. I guess they just.. use the correct tyres ;)

I'm not going to call you a liar.... I guess ymmv.... However my awd audi on summer tyres as you've stated was amazing in the snow and ice we had last couple of years. I would not have been able to conduct my business without it on at least a dozen occasions last year. The difference it made was either staying home or not... I.e. Binary.

Unfortunately it's now gone.... But that means I can buy a defender for snow duty lol.

My opinion on that remains the same as it always was (But I'm going to try and not get so worked about it this year :D) but merlin clearly has some big thing about snow - so much so that he's basing his car choice on it - therefore it surely makes more sense to do the tyre thing than choose an entire car based on its ability in weather we rarely see in the UK for more than a few days at once.
 
OP needs to realise that FWD or even 4WD alone is not going to solve all of his problems.

Most important is technique IMO,
Second is tyres - I witnessed Range Rovers, Freelanders etc. stuck last year.
Third is drivetrain - Sure FWD/4WD will make the best of a bad situation, but in any case I think a RWD car with proper winter tyres on is going to be more successful than a 4WD car with summer tyres.

Changing tyres costs £20-40 twice a year, it's hardly a hardship and if you really are as concerned about staying mobile as you say you are - you'll heed the advice given to you here and do it.

I realise that awd is obviously preferable to rwd, but if you were to put a rwd car on snow tyres against a fwd car on summer tyres I can guarantee the rwd car would be better every time. As it happens, I never put snow tyres on my old car and it performed really well in the snow, but that's because it weighed several tons and had huge, thick tyres. My current car is AWD, and whilst it'll probably be fine with the small amount of snow we usually get, I'll be putting on winter tyres if it's anything like last year.
 
Get a landcruiser.
In the Snow in wales I was with the GF in her C2 following her mum and partner in there landcruiser.
We got stuck trying to get up an icy hill and they drove off without realising.
Neither car had winter tyres.
If snow is that much of an issue you need a 4WD, and then snow tyres to go anywhere.
 
I miss the merlin wit hthe DC5 that smoked everything (other than Drex's RX-7) and the merlin which destroyed a pair of tyres on that whacky bendy hill!! ;)

I think you've already made your mind up mate, think there's only one winner here!

My time for bhp will come back around, priority for me atm is family + business, my car is just transport to me right now. It's actually quite a liberating feeling not being arsed about your car. :)

I've got a drive around Silverstone coming up next month for kicks tho. :cool:

Right I'm off to the tyre gimps now as I've just picked up my 3rd puncture of the year in the BMW. Happy days. :rolleyes:
