Extending from my post in the GOT TV thread as Shamikebab and Richdog are having a hissy fit :D

I managed to read book one and two of Game Of Thrones in about a week, couldn't put them down, however i'm really struggling with book 3, it just doesn't have me hooked like the first two did, I find I don't really care much about what's going on, the pacing, the story itself, the characters, did anyone else have this problem?

You mean you haven't actually finished book 3 yet? You might want to not read this thread as someone is bound to spoil a pretty big plot twist that happens in it.

To answer the question, no I didn't have that problem. As I recall book 3 was pretty similar in style and characters to books 1 & 2. I had no problem getting into it at all :)

I think most people regard book 3 as the best in the series and book 4 the weakest. I would stay out of this thread though as scorza says.

Thanks guys, i'm about 270 pages in and it's all too focused on Sam, Arya, Sansa and John, doesn't have me itching to read further like the last two books did.

Thanks for the plot twist warning though, had made me want to speed through and find it :)

Can I just be pedantic and point out that it's: "A Song of Ice and Fire, volume 3: A Storm of Swords." Only volume 1 is "A Game of Thrones".

And I found most of the books slow to get going, but yes, number three is the best.

I've just finished reading this book and for me the first half wasn't amazing just character building etc. But the secong half........WOW!!! So much happened that i just did not see coming at all. Best book so far!

The "thing" (can I say "RW"?) was a bit spoilt for me, as I'd looked *very* briefly on the wiki to clarify something about a relatively minor character who was introduced earlier on, and it casually mentioned the post-RW status of a not-so-minor character... hopefully that *doesn't* make too much sense. :D

It was still shocking, and I still didn't see much of it coming, but the main impact was pretty much lost.

Moral of this tale: Avoid the Ice & Fire wiki at all costs until you've read *all* the books, but I guess most people will be smart enough to have realised that already. :)

Yes, as long as you don't put the full words. And yes, that's the danger of wikis: even where they say they're going to have spoilers, it's hard to stop reading, and hard to stop the spoilers spilling out in hints.

Book 3 had me hooked more so than A Clash of Kings. It had some pretty interesting plot events and twists.

Will be starting A Feast for Crows tomorrow.

I'm on the last 100 or so pages of book 3 part 1...still hasn't got me hooked. Yes some events have shocked me, such as what happens with JL and I like the way the bigger picture is being shown with Melisandre and he who shall not be named, however, out of the first 3 books so far this is the weakest for me.

I do like Davos though :)

It's all about book 3 part 2!

I'm firmly of the opinion that book 3 was the best in the series, by a country mile. You are correct, it does start off slowly but just wait until the story really begins to ramp up, so much happens in such a short space of time, its like a rollercoaster.

If they show these scenes (and frankly anything else involving Gregor and his antics in the Riverlands) then there's going to be some very dark tv in store in a couple years.

I was thinking about the re-use of the phrase by someone else - my favourite bit of book three.
