i7 selloffs

My X58 / i7 930 was one of my best buys in a long time

Overclocked to 4ghz straight away without any messing and the temps are really low. Just can't see my needing any more power for a while.

some people just always buy the new stuff regardless of upgrade benefit etc....personally i went from a q6600 to my i7920 and the difference was massive. played around with the sandy bridge stuff and its ok but wouldn't call the upgrade necessary.

dunno why your worrying about bf3 - i7s will be more than enough same with a 480... this ideology that because hardware is no longer 'current' means its rubbish is stupid. Heck the witcher 2 the most pc intensive game out with ubersampling - can be run on my rig at about 25 fps, bf3 wont even require anywhere near that grunt level to run properly.

your honestly going to have to wait for a console refresh to even start seriously contemplating a new cpu/gpu to play stuff properly - and thats years away. (unless CD Projekt RED make more games of course ;) )

I moved from i7 920 after my X58 board died, over to a Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 & 2500K.

Main reason for changing was SATA3 6.0 gb/s & pci-e 3.0, currently o/c to 4.2ghz.

My only gripe was the i7 920 only made £102 on the bay.:(

Same here, I can't see a reason to upgrade my CPU when my 920 @ 4GHz does everything I need it to.

I upgraded to an i7 2600k and have been playing around with the overclocks and i can get 4.7ghz out of it without changing the voltage!

They are a brilliant piece of kit but the reason i changed is because i got £70 off the retail price! I would wait till bulldozer and compare the two then make the choice!

I am happy with my 2600k though :)

Just wondering why everyone seems to be selling their I7 setups?

Im a bit new to all this is there something new on the horizon?

there is something new on the horizon, that and they are idiots...sorry but that is all there is too it! upgrading just for the sake of upgrading, somehow for no obvious reason, the 'old' Core i7 processors have suddenly became useless and won't do anything properly, contrary to every single piece of evidence I have ever seen on the subject mind.

so want to know why? too many people obsessed with getting another 0.1 second faster in SuperPI and an extra 2FPS in a game already running at 70FPS, that is the people doing it, cause frankly nobody with squidgy stuff inside their skulls would really do it.

But it's all about playing with new kit and epeen. I can understand it and if I was single in a good job and had time on my hands I'd do it too. Not to mention it doesn't really cost that much to upgrade the initial cost is high but buying and selling constantly you can upgrade quite cheaply...

I would love to try an sb setup, (mainly because it's new tech). But i simply cant afford the outlay, and considering that what i already have is overkill for my gaming needs as it is, it would be a bit pointless. I think they make a fantastic upgrade though for someone on an older socket, such as s775.

It's not really about playing with new kit though, that's the thing. People think it is, but in reality its not.

Once the courier has been, and the excitement of opening the brown box and looking at your new CPU/Motherboard it's pretty much over.

In fact, once it's installed it is over. Windows is windows, your games are still the same games. Yeah things might be 0.001 second quicker but you don't notice.

The thing is, if you upgrade every five years then yeah you notice quite a jump in performance. i7 to i7 is stupid!!!!!!! and ! for good luck :D

If someone can tell me ANYTHING which warrants an i7 upgrade to sandybridge I'll eat, erm, something. Ivybridge might be worth it as it has more cores so things like video encoding will benefit. To be honest, I do a lot of video encoding and I seriously thought about looking at ivybridge. The thing is, most of my encodes are during the night and by morning they are all finished. So I don't even need ivybridge in all honesty.

Bottom Line, spend your money on some other gadget like an ipad or, and here's me thinking out of the box, a gym membership, new clothes, savings for a holiday  yeah, maybe not.....stick with the techy stuff :p

another utterly clueless post, which wreaks of hostility towards people for no reason. Good for you!

I'll give you 2 reasons off the top of my head. :)

Power efficiency + 1155

does anyone else think that maybe some people upgrade to keep up with the internet joneses?

I used to but have seen the error of my ways.... I will upgrade but not for another year or two, not whilst bread and milk are so darn expensive :)

PS my second name is Jones so maybe i was trend setting :D

Like mentioned i think its just because Sandbridge and the up comming Bulldozer.

I dont see the point though,I have a i7 860 @ 3.8,8gb of ram and a 6950 2gb and it just eats through everything ive threw at it with ease so....i probably wount be upgrading for a long time yet.

Im still keeping my 920 for awhile. Does everything I want it to with speed and I havent overclocked it yet.......perhaps I should one day.....

I can do even better than that, I can tell you something that is both sandybridge, i7 and worth upgrading to without switching form factor (desktop-laptop).

i7 2629m to i7 2920xm.
