Family hatchbacks - suggestions

So we test drove a Mondeo earlier this afternoon. It fits on the driveway (just) and my wife can find a comfortable driving position. Next up is to identify the level of trim we want, and to make sure that's in budget :p

Petrol engine is a certainty, as is a hatchback, and we're edging towards the Titanium / Titanium X as it has a far nicer interior & dashboard with some nice extra toys.

Fix your original car TBH. You know the work has been done, and a clutch will be about £300 fitted, and if the exhaust does need to be done, expect to pay no more than £200 for the whole system.

The AC not working is probably a condenser leak, about £60 for a new one and £30 for a regas and £50 to fit.

Save the money. :)

I was going to say 1.5TD Kangoo. Can't imagine you could tow much with it though. What are you planning to tow anyway? Something cool?

Alas unfortunately not, probably just a trailer loaded with kayaks / canoes for Scouts.

This is one option, but it's only money :p The added chance for a breakdown with a new-born is something that we'd prefer to avoid, and a change after 8 years isn't a bad thing.

If you haven't 100% made your mind up yet, at the 7-8K budget add these to your list:

-09 or 59 plate Peugeot 207/308 hatch or estate ~20K miles (I kid ye not )
-Seat Altea diesel DSG (cross between a car and an mpv)

Thanks for the suggestions but a troubled history with French motors (specifically Peugeot / Citroen) means I keep well clear these days, and the Altea is a dirty diesel which is something our annual mileage doesn't really justify :) A quick look on autotrader suggests that there aren't very many of the 2.0L FSI petrol ones about :( (I'm confident that the 100bhp 1.6 Petrol couldn't pull the skin off of rice pudding!)

There aren't many Alteas around, period. I'd actually forgotten about them until Paradigm reminded me I'd been looking for one :D

It's proving uncannily difficult to find a good-spec petrol model of the Mondeo :( The wife has her heart set on a Titanium model and there are practically only two in the country. Women! :)

Have you looked at the Ghia/Ghia X? IIRC they are very similar in their toys etc (Ghia X having climate, heated/cooled seats etc etc) and the Titanium name was just something that was phased in to replace Ghia.
