Hi folks,

Looking for a portable player that will play MP3 and FLAC files. For general walking the dog use etc.

Would like about 4GB minimum, although more would be nice.

Wouldn't like to spend hundreds either. A decent brand at a decent price really.

So, anybody got any recommendations? :D

I could possibly use my phone for this (Acer Liquid) as I have a 16GB micro SD card in it, however I'm a bit concerned about it getting yanked out of my pocket or something. If this is the only option without spending silly amounts of money, does anyone have any recommendations for some decent headphones. Nothing class leading, just good enough. Would prefer headphones, but could maybe use in-ear ones if they're nice and cushioned, and not those horrid, hard plastic things.

Thanks.

Sansa Clip+, Rockboxed. It's what I use, what gets recommended here time and again, and what I've recommended to everyone I know. It really is that good ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. Will look into it :)

A quick Google search shows the headphones to be exactly the opposite of what I'm after, but the player itself looks fine. Is the Rockbox thing just a case of plugging it in via USB and putting a file on it or is it not quite that simple?

The supplied earphones are always terrible with any portable player (some more terrible than others, but always terrible), just invest in a good pair of IEMs/headphones and be done with it... I never even entertained the idea of using those included with my Clip+.

These days (since it's now a 'stable' version) it's a case of downloading the Rockbox app and running the installer. Rockbox itself is a custom firmware (think of getting a Windows PC and installing Linux), it gives a lot more flexibility in the files it'll play as well as other related functions not present in the original firmware, I started using it years ago on my iPod and swear by it now, if nothing more it's worth having a look at and seeing as you can dual boot the Clip+, you've nothing to lose by trying it :)

If you're planning on using the packaged headphones why on earth does flac compatibilty even register for you?

I wasn't. That was just a general 'wow, those look terrible' comment :D

As already stated, I'm not looking for the cream of the crop in terms of headphones. Just something decent enough. The main reason behind me wanting/needing a .flac player is because 90% of my music is .flac.

Think I'm going to order the Clip+ and try out Rockbox. Looks pretty good. I've used custom firmwares in the past so should be fine finding my way around it :D

Will also look into those earphones. Thanks :)

The majority of my music is flac too, but I just use dbpoweramp to convert the music to AAC, takes around 15 seconds per album, I don't see the point of flac for a portable player.

maybe a secondhand nokia 5800, with folderplay app, that supports flac :), plus the camera is decent, and you have satnav, phone, torch (app that uses the flash led's so its pretty bright :D )

sound quality is good too
