It's our 16th wedding anniversary in September and I'm looking into taking my wife to the Lake District for a long weekend (Fri - Mon). She loves her comfort so definitely no camp sites please! Not really looking at doing a great deal either as I'll be recovering from an operation, we'll still be able to go for walks - just not hiking up mountains!

Feel a bit of a tool! Did a search earlier but mis-spelt district so nothing came up. Now done it properly and have found a couple of threads and I quite like the look of the Cranleigh that was recommended by PoD. Not going to be doing anything too strenuous so it looks an ideal place to stay and I'm sure my Mrs will love it.

Budget? As a general rule, I always check http://www.mrandmrssmith.com/ as from previous experience their hotel selection/recommendations are absolutely superb.

Does rain a lot there been loads of times, depends on ya budjet as there's some nice posh hotels up there in big country houses very fancy indeed or I always find the little places run by old couple's as always seem to get better treatment and hardly any other guests.

I cannot speak too highly of Harvington House. Graham loves the lakes, walking and mountain biking; he is a tour guide for the National Trust and will be able to point you in the right direction to enjoy the lakes based on your needs / condition.
Book an evening at the Theatre by the Lake and a specially priced Sunday evening supper at the fantastic Morrels - you MUST book these two well in advance to avoid disappointment!
As others have pointed out, the Lake District is wet - however, it is typically wettest in the summer months and September is not usually too bad.

Did have to drive home in torrential downpours though.
Right, booked ourselves into the Cranleigh. The wife is going to be so chuffed when she sees the room!
Now I have another question! I went into the loft yesterday to get our waterproof trousers but I couldn't find them. Will I really need to take some? I don't really want to fork out a small fortune on something that I might not wear for years or ever again. We're not planning on doing mega walks but on the other hand I don't want to be walking round during the day with wet jeans/trousers.

I stayed there just last week, in fact, and agree with stockhausen (if such a thing can be believed!). Graham seems to know all of the local fells extremely well. Also, Keswick is an excellent place to stay in the lakes as it's nice and central. If you're not up to conquering Skiddaw, there's an almost completely flat walk along the disused railway line, or if you feel up to walking 10 miles, a loop around Derwentwater is lovely in good weather. If you walk along the disused railway you can come back via the Castlerigg stone circle. These are merely some suggestions that I've enjoyed in the past
I was under the impression that November was the wettest month, but regardless of that it rains a lot up there, so take appropriate clothing. If you're driving everywhere it's not so bad, though.

Yeah lovely looking place.Looks like a nice hotel you've picked, but a shame its near Bowness - all the tourists stay there
Agree about bowness though - very, very tourist orientated (and filled) but the location is ok for getting deeper into the lakes.

Get the Queen Anne suite.
Stayed there about 5 times so far and had an excellent stay everytime. So many places to eat around Windermere didn't see the need to stay somewhere that offered full board.

Good choice - we stayed there on our honeymoon in late May. Lovely place.
Is it the Sanctuary, or couldn't you stretch to that??!! We couldn't.
Don't worry about waterproof trousers. Wear shorts. Less to get wet.
I would have gone for the Sanctuary but it was booked, in fact, most of the rooms were booked but still got a nice one. I have just picked up some rain proof trousers from our local sportshop for a fiver so they'll do me for the push bike as well.
Not too bothered about it being touristy - after all that's what we are! Just plan on chilling away from work & family, eating & drinking loads and spending as much time in bed as we can! You wouldn't believe we'd been married 16 years
