New car time in the autumn, need something dull

I agree with the bulk of your post but I do think you are misrepresenting his opinion somewhat - he does agree that on snow, winter tyres are better.

There are an awful lot of factors that make a difference other than temperature though - water clearing ability of UHP tyres are often better than mid range tyres for example and that doesn't just go away when the temp drops...

Totally this. I have no problem accepting the clear advantages of the correct tyres on snow and ice and even specifically recommended them for merlins situation given the huge weighting he placed on snow performance.

Just out of interest, at which point would you consider fitting winter tyres, (what level and duration of bad weather would it require for you to take this decision)?

I must admit that I find the Exeo quite a decent looking car especially in Sport trim (I think) where you get the large 5-spoke alloys.

Sure it isn't the latest tech under the skin but it is still a new car. I can't really see how a used A4 is the same thing for less cash. One is used and the other is new which is quite a distinguishing factor for a start!

If I feel my hand forced towards an oil burner I would definitely consider one if the depreciation fairy puts one within my grasp.

On the sub topic of winter tyres I am really considering some this year. I'm not sure if it is the car or the FK-452's it is running but my motor is laughable in anything approaching 0'C let alone ice on the un gritted rural roads and snow... forget about it!

If we need to head out in the ice or snow I've always opted for my GF's car where possible which seems to cope so much better.

I spotted that our chairman stuck his winter wheels/tyres on his 3 series touring already... perhaps a tad premature :p

But having winter tyres on for the whole 'winter period' is hardly an issue either.

My mate got some on his BMW last winter and still has them on :D

Out of interest I priced up some Michelin Pilot Alpin 3 for the Merc and they came in at over £400 each.

**** that!

I showed a picture of the Exeo to my daughter this morning and explained it would be replacing my blue car.

She burst into tears. Not a big SEAT fan.

You want ContiWinterContacts. But good winter tyres in 17"+ are very expensive.

My time for bhp will come back around, priority for me atm is family + business, my car is just transport to me right now. It's actually quite a liberating feeling not being arsed about your car. :)

I've got a drive around Silverstone coming up next month for kicks tho.

Right I'm off to the tyre gimps now as I've just picked up my 3rd puncture of the year in the BMW. Happy days.

haha, fair enough mate! Need to get back on that bike before you forget how to ride it!

Good times they were, that day out cost me a hell of a lot of money. Have to replace both front tyres on my ST3 after destroying them following you on that random hill!

The day I melted 2 x RE010's, brake faded my brembos both up the hill and down it and then had my doors blown off by an RX7 whilst doing 148mph* myself.

*Private road.

I've still got a video on my hd somewhere of a certain Rover 220 Turbo, Integra DC5 and ST220 :D
