I have setup a windows 2008 R2 x64 standard server on ESX 3.5.0 - its been running as a file server only for a few weeks. Today I went into the network properties to disable QoS and it hang the server

Symptoms were

-can not ping
-unable to open console via vSphere client

Had to do a reset of vm host in Vsphere

Is the problem due to 3.5.0 not being 2008 R2 x64 complaint.

I also read the VMWare SVGA driver can cause this, I have checked and the VGA drive is standard microsoft one.

Ayy ideas anyone

It sounds like the host crashed which would cause the virtual machine to crash so checking the ESX logs would be where I would start. Ensure it's fully patched, etc. if possible I'd certainly be thinking of moving to ESXi 5.0 (4.0 as a minimum) but that depends on your licecning, etc.

Other things to check are the hardware (MemtestX86+ would be a start as if the memory is faulty that would definitely cause the issue you mentioned).

The ESX server also host another 3 virtual servers all Windows 2003 and my first view was the whole ESX hypervisor has crashed, but the other servers were fine, I could ping them, rdp to them and open console to them and all services were running - just this one host crashed
