All over the world...
Hi all,

At the moment feeling disillusioned with my current job in IT...things are slow and i have no idea if things will ever pick up plus ive been there nearly 10yrs so fancy a change.

Been thinking about maybe training as an electrician or plumber as my uncle runs his own construction firm so ill get jobs no problem.

Does anyone know how much these courses are roughly???

try and get a few days shadowing an electrician or a plumber before you jump into such a trade

Ive done that as ive had my uncle do some work in my house so had his plumber working in the house.

Also id need to do the course on a part time basis as at the moment im the only one bringing any money home so being unemployed wouldnt be a good idea lol...end up probably losing my house.

Hmmmm didn't you say you were some kind of playboy It company director in Canada earning 6 figures and dropping big money on keeping the women sweet, now you want to be a plumber:confused:

Plumbers, sparks in general will turnover around 1k per working week at most and you have all the costs and tools associated with running a business, advertising, accounts, pensions, holiday considerations, bad debts etc.

Some of the courses can cost well over 2k your best bet would be to attend a college course for a number of years gaining on the job experience.

Is there no road to go down in IT building on what you've done over the last 10 years?

Are you totally done with IT, or just done with what you are doing now? Is there something IT wise that you'd like to be doing instead?

Yep there was a time when i was making plenty of £`s and travelling the world doing consultancy but ya know this recession thing kinda hit me and my job pretty hard....so things arent as good as they have been...im only in my job because i still get paid good money but im bored of it so fancy a new direction???

Tbh im fed up of IT, i could do some consultancy for my brother in Canada whos a backup solution expert but means that id have to change fields and re-train under him but even then im not guaranteed a job with his company plus i just dont fancy IT anymore.

I fancy doing something that brings satisfaction to me and once im done my training then id be working with my uncle as hes always in need of skilled manual workers ie leccys and plumbers etc.

You will go from earning six figures, to end up earning less than minimum wage(Apprentice)?

Something isn't right.

Even after you train, you will earn a decent living wage, but won't be great compared to what you get in high skilled I.T with certifications/degrees that goes with it.

Lol i dont earn 6 figures...wish i was then i wouldnt have a worry at all lol.

Anyhow think ill have a chat with my uncle and see what he says...he has mentioned it before in the past but didnt pay much attention to him.

Go for it if it's what you want, I reckon at some point in my life I'll be jacking IT in to take over the family business (to be an estate agent, woohoo), but not for a long while yet :)
