Hello,

Just installed the above CPU with stock fan, have not yet got an OS on there, when i go into BIOS it's showing temp at 82C which climbs to 92C and stays there within 30 seconds!

I did start off with the Gelid Tranquilo rev2 but this was reporting at 93C before shutting it's self down so put the stock fan on.

Now it seems to stay at 92C and doesn't trigger the failsafe but obviously this heat is not right. The motherboard temp stays at a nice 28C.

Wtf is going on?

Appreciate any input, thanks all :(:(

I would have said the heatsink(s) were not correctly installed or the motherboard is reading the temp sensors wrong.

Really silly question time: Did you remove the plastic cover on the Gelid cpu cooler and how much thermal past did you use.

Yes the cover was removed, originally we used quite a lot of paste, but since installing the stock fan we used only what was already put on there by Intel. It's definately in right by the looks of it and all 4 screws / clips are in place. It's very snug and does not move.

this sounds like a dodgy temp sensor to me

Anyway i can amend / check this? I thought that originally, as with the Gelid on, the temp would stay at 93 and never move. However with the stock on, starts at around 75/80 then climbs to 92c in around 30 seconds and then stays there. It isn't turning it's self off now, but obviously i don't want to leave it on to long.

What motherboard is it?

It is an ASRock z68 Extreme4 Gen3.

put your hand on the heatsink when it is reporting 92 degrees and you will know if it actually at 92 degrees or not ;) :p

download realtemp and see what that says

I'm assuming this reads it from somewhere other than where the motherboard is reading it from?

You see, i haven't even got as far as putting an OS on it yet. Due to my being scared of it really being 92C and blowing something.

Someone help? :(

You can always check by touching the heatsink while the pc is running. If it does warm then you do have a problem, but I personally think its a faulty sensory.

If the HS is warm then it would be doing its job, it's if its not warm that you'd need to worry, especially if the CPU is in the 80's.

All,

It does get a tiny bit warm but nothing major. This morning when i first turned it on it was at 50c then climbed to 91c.

Can you run it outside the case? Back plate should be pretty toasty if the cooler isn't working... (Sometimes I can feel the warm spot on mine through the side of the case if it's been loaded a lot :P)

yes, what i was suggesting was that if the cpu is reporting 90-odd degrees, the heatsink should be rather warm

have you tried a program like coretemps, my understanding is that the temperature these programs report are different from your bios as they are reading values from the cpu and not a sensor ( i may be wrong!) but it would be interesting to see if the temperatures correlate.

Will check this tonight and update. thanks
Maybe a BIOS update issue?

Yes possibly, will try this tonight

I'll need an OS on for this won't i. I'll try the BIOS update first and if it's been on for a while without getting to hot i'll get Windows on and try.

Thanks guys

if you take the cooler off the processor, does the thermal paste on the processor look as those its covered evenly ?
