Convince me to buy a Civic Type R (EP3)!

Seems cheap!

As for playing it cool, I'll be nervous as hell. My test drive would consist of me taking on the driving manorisms of an old granny!! :p

Pff, find a nice straight bit of road and give it the beans. I did when I took mine out on the test drive.

Just let the temps/oil pressure raise (after about 10 minutes) otherwise VTEC won't kick in y0.

If you can find one, grab a JDM (white), or a JDM replica EP3, they are so pretty.

I owned a milano red EP3 for a year, sold it, and will be looking to buy another one within the next 6-12 months.

yes, they are fantastic cars, you will NOT be dissapointed!

Once you go V-TEC, you'll never go back :p

Me neither, it'll be going back to OEM cosmetically (needs some OEM wheels too). But it's the right colour :D

There's this beauty up norf' http://www.itr-dc5.com/forum/index.php?/topic/25532-2001-cw-dc5-for-sale-59k/

but as per the comments it probably needs a k-pro (£500?)

Sorry to hi-jack OP :p You'd only need the K-Pro if you bought the car with all of the modifications. I haven't read the comments on the page though, so he might have changed his mind about taking them off.

For the love of god why the hyphen!? Whyyyy! :o

I'm just playing :p

Did actually think twice about whether a hiphen should go in there or not, and decided to go with it lol.

I think a Kpro and remap would be a good idea myself

:D

How much have you to spend?

If your budget can stretch it, why not go test drive cars like focus MK2 sts, leon cupra, vxr astra etc

Think believe it or not the insurance is cheaper on all of the above as they are not crashed as much, and fast and more refined.

type R's are quite cheap now so if thats all you can afford then go for it, just make sure the gearbox is good as they tend to go in them, and make sure it has plenty of oil in it and no smoke on VTEC.

they are great cars if they are looked after well.

No they dont, they have no major common mechanical faults, it would be very unusal for any major mechanical failure on a Honda thats had the service schedule adhered to, particulary an EP3

Yes they do, don't believe me? go have a read an any ep3 fourm, well documented fault.

On the ep3 dont the drive shafts have a fault as well? My cousin who is a Honda freak tells me that a pre-facelift suffers from this and the thing about gearboxs is true.

Well known EP3 foibles: gearbox (weakpoint on integras and earlier Vtec engined civics too I believe) and the steering rack.

The gearboxes are a POTENTIAL weak-point if they haven't been serviced properly, it's not a case of every EP3 will have a failed gearbox. The earlier ones had a factory re-call on the steering rack too IIRC.

The Integra suffers from these things far less ;)

Just sold mine this morning for £4500 - gutted to see it go :(

Awesome cars that will put a smile on your face everytime you take it out. 2 and a half years and 2 trips to the Nurburgring and it never missed a beat and will be sorely missed.

Mk1 mx5 is next on the cards, with the view to track prepping it and maybe going down the FI route  However that wont be for a few months so back in my mk4 astra for the time being :o:(

I am back on the hunt for one of these but really struggling to find one worth the cash, would like to spend 4500 (after bartering so looking at cars around 5k advertised) or less really, a facelift would have course be ideal.

But, most are just not worth 5 thousand quid to me, maybe I'm too picky :(

What would people say to aim for, for 5 grand? I'm in the West Midlands if it makes a difference on price and due to time constraints I'm looking within 50 miles max.

I would wanna spend 5 grand. I would be hoping for any colour but red (I like it but too high maintenance for me, I'm too busy), facelift, under 70k, standard is fine, good history, really good condition in and out, sensible amount of owners... 2/3 tops.

Is 5k on the button, or am I still dreaming? I wish there was some kinda uniform amount of car for the money if that makes sense, but theres no trend to prices from looking around.

Seen a couple at dealers which look better bets than private sales which does actually seem quite odd! They're turning into one of those cars people just drive around and not bother looking after which is a ballache when you sell one car you've spent loads on so it's spot on and buy a shed for top money to do the same as you usually do when you actually give a monkeys about the chunk of cash you've got sitting outside on 4 wheels...
