Pushing cars along on the motorway

I typically find myself always wanting to overtake someone and pushing them along for all of the 700 miles a week I drive, so imagine my pain. Just imagine it.

50mph average speed limit sections do create some amazing driving faux pas', my favourite are the people that madly accelerate inbetween cameras then brake for the gantrys - clearly the term AVERAGE wasn't explained very well to them at school :p

After people who needlessly indicate for every sodding thing they do, most often than not incorrectly, people who WONT overtake enough me the most.

How is it possible that I can see its perfectly safe to overtake 6 cars AND the lorry they are sat behind, in one move, but the 6 people in front of me cant see it, for less traffic?
Why would you choose to sit at 40mph when it is perfectly dsafe to overtake something?
Why would you sit behind a ******* tractor for 5 miles when you can get past him in seconds at no risk.

Remins me of the A17 in norfolk.

On a clear summers day, you can see for miles. Arrow straight, not a hedgerow or obstacle in sight as far as the eye can see in some sections.

Yet still people sit behind the lorrys doing 40mph when there is nothing coming the other way.

I just overtake the lot of 'em in one go :D

I love the A35! Much more interesting than boring motorway, nice mix of road types and plenty of overtaking. Driving it tonight and looking forward to it :)

I know you do the journey fairly regularly so it would be interesting to see what time of the day/which day you go.

I've been doing the Bournemouth/Southampton/Portsmouth to Cornwall route once or twice a month for the last six years. In that time I can count on one hand the trips where I've had the opportunity to enjoy the drive.

There are so many bottlenecks where you get stuck behind something slow that when you get to the few overtaking places, everyone rushes to get past them and then gets immediately stuck behind the next slow vehicle which is half a mile up the road.

There is nothing to look forward to on the A35 except caravans, lorries and members of the 40mph crew.

Maybe they are all sat there in fear at the monthly updated death figures for that road displayed every few miles.

It is a dodgy bit of road though. Massively too wide for a two lane one so you sometimes get someone making a third overtaking lane up the middle. problem is when someone coming the other way has the same idea, then the net result is that some one needs to add a few more to the death count.

I don't drive that way often but I tend to just trickle along with everyone else unless it only requires a one or two vehicle overtake.

Chap I knew through work came a cropper almost at the very spot on your link on his motorbike. Shame, was a nice chap with wife and kids.

I tend to do it at a mix of times really. It can be irritating when it's very busy but most other times there are ample overtaking opportunities, plenty of nice twisty bits, the odd bit of dual carriageway to speed things up a bit, nice sweeping A roads, pretty much a bit of everything. If you dont mind adding 10 minutes to your trip you can turn off at Dorchester and head up through Crewkerne and Chard instead of via Bridport, which is a route which rarely ever has any traffic on it and has a really fantastic fast section over the top of some hills as well.

It beats boring Motorway driving - I look forward to the drive to Southampton yet I've become so utterly bored of the tedious drive to Worcester (Get onto A38 at Plymouth, engage cruise, don't turn it off again until the Worcester turnoff 3 hours later) that I use the train for that journey more often than not, whereas even if the train was free I'd still drive the Southampton route

I used to enjoy it even more when I would do the drive whilst at Uni after finishing work at 10pm :D

The only properly irritating bit is heading back Westbound just after Ringwood. That can be properly tedious at times. And it's also a shame they turned the Ringwood roundabouts section into a 50 limit :(

Its fascinating watching this as a passenger. When my dad was dropping me off at uni the same car overtook us over 15 times in about 50 miles while we were doing a constant 70mph

What annoys me more is the idiots who stay in the middle lane going past me at +2-3mph when I'm fast approaching a truck in the inside lane despite the outside lane being clear.

Drives me nuts too, especially given that most cars sit at an indicated 50 (on such a limit) but in actual fact are doing 46-48MPH, it amazes me the number of trucks that'll blast through @ 55MPH, yes the specs cameras won't get them, but God forbid there was an accident - the "spy in the cab" tachograph would have them - rightly - bang to rights.

Numptys.

I bloody hate that in spec areas, I'm sitting there at 50mph in the inside lane and all the time I will have some crazed lorry driver up my chuff trying to push me along because he has little room to over take or someone is blocking him over taking, Then spec area ends and I'm gone. Did he really have to try and scare me over the spec limit?

Reasonably busy but not excessively so, some fun overtakes, 34.4mpg :)

Glad you had a good trip and saw decent economy. :p

Cheers for the Crewkerne/Chard tip. I think I've been redirected that way once when there was an accident but I've never really thought about it as a main route.

Might give it a go next time I'm travelling down just to mix it up a bit. :)

yeah I agree is slightly annoying......and when it comes to hills...the retards dont realize you gotta speed up a bit b4 u reach the bank to continue at your normal driving spped.

I think people use a lot of their attention listening to music...talking...on the phone...or daydreaming.

I think MrLOL hit the nail on the head:

Its people who drive at a constant pedal travel rather than a constant speed. They press the pedal so much, then when they come to a down hill section, they speed up. When they come to an uphill section, they slow down.

People stick to a constant pedal travel rather than a constant speed and don't compensate for inclines (up or down) which CC does for you.

I see it all the time around J 38 of the M1. Huge massive up hill section around emley moor, then a massive downhill section the other side of it.

You'll overtake them on the way up doing 70, then they come flying past doing 90 on the way down.

I've never noticed this, I tend to exit roadwork's like a scolded cat, but only upt to the speed I was doing before (often has a 9 in it).

I guess if your chosen speed was higher than mine you would catch me later on, but you wouldn't see me speeding up and slowing down. Unless some kind gent pulled into the 2nd lane to let me pass and I didn't want to make him slow down in that little gap.
