Phone or sim for emergancy

With winter on the way and all the snow of last year I'm looking at getting either a mobile or sim card just to keep in the card as an emergancy.

Every I can find wants to top up with £10 first but I just would'nt use it. Put a few £ on it maybe but not a lot more. Plus most have to be used every 6 months. Just want to leave it in my bag/car and not have to worry.

Any ideas?
 
"used every 6 months" = call your other mobile then put it down ;) 10 is the min topup for the inc purchase for a lot of payg as they sell the handset for less than cost and this helps recover some of the negative value. The best device for this right now is the tried and tested Nokia 1616 new or just ebay some older handset and order a SIM from any of the networks free.

Carry a spare handset in the car then if you are that clumsy, if your phone gets waterlogged the SIM will likely still be fine.

Have you thought about getting a flare gun or a CB radio?

I keep a spare phone just in case. I just use an old mobile from years ago with an Orange sim in it. It gets charged and discharged regular (every 5 days or so it lasts). Pays to be prepared.

I am prepared. I have my phone and a charger. 9 times out of 10 I have my laptop with me too (which has a SIM slot), which I could use to get in touch with someone should all else fail (I also have an inverter in the car should I need to charge the laptop).

Do you carry round a nuclear fallout shelter, just in case?

It's not like in winter I'm not prepared, I have food and extra (winter) clothing in the car, snow chains, and a shovel.

Now you're being stupid. if your so prepared WTF was your post about??

There are millions of reasons why a phone may fail and i am prepared. I travel long distances through rural area's and have small children with me a lot of time. I have never used it but i am more than likely to one day.

Name 100 of them. :p

Having a second phone is handy in case of emergency, especially if on another network that works in an area where your primary does not which can happen quite easily if out in the sticks!
 
Get a sim from 3, if you go to three.co.uk, you can get one, plus if you decide to get a PAYG phone from 3, you get unlimited skype as well, or if you buy a used payg.
