What cooler for my new build?

Because they are the only coolers capable of running extreme overclocks with low noise bar full on watercooling.

OP never mentioned an extreme overclock, though ;)
In my opinion, any aftermarket cooler for ~£30 is fine for the average overclocker.

I disagree and i am not talking about bleeding edge here just a nice overclock
even my thermalright archon is not comfortable with a core i5 750 @4ghz @1.4 volts it hits 85c under IBT so why settle for an average cooler ? when you can save a tenner here or there and simply get the best to start with.

I like the Asrock for the overclocking options in the BIOS as I'm new to overclocking (this is actually my first ever build).

So the same can be said of the board but from what he has said here he plans on overclocking etc and once use to it all he will appreciate having got a silver arrow or d14 very much.To me it just seems silly to be spending nigh on a grand and not get a silver arrow or d14.

Fair enough. Obviously the NH-D14 or Silver Arrow would be in everybody's dream air-cooled build, but if on a budget like the OP, a £30 aftermarket heatsink will do just fine I reckon :)

he has 1k to spend I'd hardly call that a tight budget and better to dump the r3 for the lancool that alone will give him the extra for the silver arrow
a £30 cooler will severely limit your overclock

so you have no problem with the extreme overclocking £200 board yet sniff at the idea of getting a £50 cooler :confused:
 
That's a very good point. A lot of people tend to buy cheap coolers and then be disappointed, only to want to upgrade once more. Something like the Silver Arrow or Noctua NH-D14 will give you the best and last a very long time. If anything, they are excellent investments because they will remain amongst the best for many years to come. So spending a tiny bit more now will save you lots in the future.

Not to mention that Noctua will send out free mounting kits if anyone ever wants to upgrade platform (not necessarily applicable to the OP but just to make a point).

C64 is completely right here.

Rather than order 1 slow 2TB disk - order 2 fast 1TB disks and set them up in Raid 0.

More than double the performance of the drive you have for very little extra cost :)
