Street Fighter (SFIV, SSFIV, HDR)

Where do you guys get a Stick? Going to invest in one soon Pads Hurting thumbs and making me do Random Combo breaking Cannon spikes :(

Get one of these: http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/qanba-q4raf-arcade-fighting-stick.htm

Works on PC/360 and PS3. A TE Round 2 will cost around £100 online (places like The Hut and Gamerbasemnt have them in stock now and again), although Kreeee reckons you can get them for £60 in stores like Gamestation which I have yet to see.

If you're not 100% sure you want to go for a stick and ~£100 is a bit too much to drop on that uncertainty, then you can get a second hand Hori EX2 from CEX for quite cheap, somewhere in the range of £15. Don't expect it to last very long, they're fine while they work but they do have a short lifespan.

I'm really starting to think something is up with my stick, if anybody has an explanation (even if it's telling me I'm just crap and it's all in my head) I'd appreciate it. I wanted to pick up a charge character as an alternate to Akuma, I tried out Bison. It really seems like I have to hammer the joystick against the gate to do charge moves, charging is fine but when I come forward unless I bring the joystick right against the gate and hit whatever button I need to the move doesn't come out and it's the same with the down, up charges.

It also happens with Akuma's dive kick (not the DF version) when I hit down and med kick it just doesn't come out half of the time and yet Yun's dive kick which is down, forward comes out no problem. It only seems to be a problem with the left, right, up and down motions diagional directions seem fine, I can do qcf and qcb motions fine.

If this helps, I can do all of the above on a pad without issue. My stick has a square gate.

It sounds like it's just you. The sticks only have 4 directional inputs (U D L R) and diagonals are just a combination of two of those, so if the diagonals work, so should both directions of that diagonal.
I'm guessing you're just not used to a square gate yet, so you're hitting DF instead of F, etc.
Go to training mode and see what your inputs look like.

Yeah I had looked at my inputs in training mode and you just see the down arrow and the button there's no diagonal inputs, I know what you're saying though if there was something wrong surely it would affect my other motions aswell. Maybe I'm just not hitting the attack input at the exact same time as the directional input or something. I'm just going to sit in training mode tonight and tomorrow night if I have to until I figure this out, I might record a video of me doing it with a pad and then the stick to see if there's any difference in the inputs.

random shoto matches. you will very rarely see my ryu, but i might use him in the tourney given the right opponent.

i thought the corners of the square gate are the diagonal inputs. i have the opposite problem sometimes, getting random diagonal input after a qcf or qcb motion. but thats more down to me than my dodgy te stick. my buttons are messed up though, i only get inputs sometime unless i slam on the buttons.

I prefer the octo gate as you can actually feel all 8 'corners' - U, D, B, F, UB, UF, DB, DF. When I put the square gate for awhile to play with Guile, I was finding I couldn't hit forward or back consistently I was hitting DB or UB instead of just B on occasions, so I even find charge characters easier on an octo gate!!

i never liked the octo gate. i am so used to the square gate, since most arcade uses it, at least in where i came from.

I think all arcades use a square gate, not that it makes much difference to me since I don't play in the arcades. I got the octo gate when I started learning to use a stick and found it much easier since I only used Ryu back then and I just got use to it.

From what I understand square gates are easier for charge characters and octo gates are better for shotos etc, yet I find shotos no problem and charge characters hard to use on my square gate.

Trust me to be awkward.

Regarding true down inputs, try the following combo:
You Seth vs dummy Gief (or any tall character to make this easier, just don't use Guy for now), in the corner. HK tatsu into foot stomps (jump forwards immediately down mk, down mk, down mk, down hk)

Do the combo then see what comes out on the input display. The down mks can be any down but the HK has to be true down. This will help you discover if the problem is with the stick or your input while doing a fun as **** combo at the same time.

For charge characters, I find sometimes I go to downforward by accident. Easiest way to test this is with Balrog's headbutt into U1. (Downback, upback+FP, forward back forward 3P)
