19k Audi TT diesel on a lease or through a bank loan

That video -
Is there even such a thing as a nice sounding diesel!

Yes - this is as close to a V8 you will get on idle and clearing its throat to a straight six noise at higher revs with the old Merc diesel and some exhaust modifications

Not bad really.

I liked the sound of my old Octavia 1.9 SLX TDI when accelerating. Still sounded like a tractor at idle though.

Lol really??? That's exactly the car I have and it sounds like a bag of crap which, of course, is exactly what it is!

And accelerating is a generous term when combined with this car!

I guess if you really really liked the TT but did mega mileage it might make sense, but I bet 95% of owners do < 10k a year in theirs.

I spoke to someone who had just got one (on 11 plate) and he basically said that he just does to many miles for work to go with the 2.0 petrol. He had done like 5000 miles in it already and it was only a few months old.

I think its a fine car to be honest, and while the diesel engine doesn't really match the sports coupe way I suppose if you do lots of miles thats your only option. :)

Sounds more like a V8 to me when it's under a bit of load, but at idle it's horrible and nothing like a V8 IMO.

One of the best sounding diesel engines is the Detroit Diesel, a 2 stroke American truck engine. Not the most environment friendly engine though :D

The V12 Detroit diesel is just as good.

You sure your turbo's behaving? Mine wasn't and that's one of the reasons I got rid.

Plus I ran it on about 70% biodiesel. That made it sound a lot less rough.

Everyone has said the TT diesel is rubbish. 51+mpg and 0-62 in 7.7 seconds doesn't sound too shabby to me. Add in the low excise duty and I think it's a good buy!
If the guy has the means to pay the loan and no other commitments what is it to do with anybody else? As far as leasing is concerned, if you buy and then sell a car after three years you will lose a lot in depreciation (apart from a very few cars) factor this in and it isn't such a terrible idea.

You pay for the depreciation anyway, the lease price has this factored in. The TT is supposed to be sports car, do you really think a rattly, low revving diesel is a good choice?

Has he driven one for any period of time.

It might just be me but I've found you need to have off set hips to drive the TT. I mean the seat and the pedals don't quite line up straight.

interesting thread.

I test drove the 1.4 scirocco and the 170 TDI this week. Dealer didn't have a 2.0 TFSI demo unfortunately but of the two I drove the diesel was by far the better car. Way more power, better delivery, less stressed, just nicer all round.

2.0 petrol might make it a more difficult choice though :)

He's going to ignore your advice, and the advice of everyone here. Let him get on with it and just look forward to the "I-told-you-so" moment later. Otherwise tears will ensue.

If you do mega mileage then the TT is the wrong choice anyway!

You need something a bit more saloon (IE a longer wheelbase and comfy seats) than a sports coupe if you do enough miles to warrant the diesel variant.
