He was 15, he knew what he was doing. I don't get why when someone's 15, their partner is a paedophile and when someone's 16 they're alright. Is there a switch someone hits on their 16 birthday that makes them legally responsible? I know it wasn't like that for me. My 16th birthday felt just like the day before mentally.

Criminals should be given sentances according to how much damage they've done, the "victim" won't come out of this with any mental trauma (at least not because he slept with her, having her banged up in jail because of their affair will probably hurt him), the state is doing more damage to her 5 kids by taking away their mum for several years.

But really that problem applies to to whichever age limit you create. If the limit was 15 then you could use the same analogy with a 14 year old. And making the law ambiguous by not mentioning any limits at all as you suggest and pressing charges depending on how much 'damage' was done is very vague and hard to enforce which will allow people to worm their way out and take advantage of the system. Not to mention you could easily have instances when adult 30 year olds attempt to sue another similarly aged person because of damage done by sleeping with the person due to pursuing a relationship with said person despite it being their choice to follow the relationship. Also what happens when a 30 year old has sex with an 11 year old but the 11 year old confidently says he has no problem with it and appears to show no signs of harm? Are we meant to let that slide? I imagine this is how the 15 year old boy is feeling. Confidence boost, sex and being paid for it and would probably say he had no problem with it too.

I don't believe the sentence was out of order. If it had been a man having sex with a 15 year old girl much more people would be approving of the sentence so I don't see why the difference of gender makes a different. We still don't know if she's married etc so she could have a husband to take care of the kids.

Seems a massive overkill tbh unless there was lots of threats and stuff... But at least I can't complain that she got off lightly because she's a woman.

I wonder how much damage this really did the kid? I'd have thought it would be a confidence boost if anything! Anyway, I'd better say no more on the topic of underage sexytime or someone'll get distressed and I'll be put in jail too.

of course he was old enough to consent.

If he had bonked a 16 year old girl nobody would say boo

he still consented either way. Why is he not old enough to consent just because she is 35?

At 15, he is not old enough to consent. She could easily of persuaded him to do it against his initial wishes, or, he may later massively regret it down the line, especially if she is now pregnant by him.

Ok so she bonked a kid who was only 16.

states reaction: send her to prison and put her 5 children (if they were young) in care.

Sorry major over reaction, give her community service or a fine but prison is way over the top.

Yes, but evn the sending of her to jail, they gave her 87 months, seven years in jail?
Folks here get less for murder with a car while drunk driving here, in fact they often get half that, serving less than half.
Amazing.

I'm sorry I can't tell if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me.

I said she should not be in jail

I think seven years is a very hefty sentence.
Is the community safer by having her there for that length of time?
I doubt it.
Jail may be due, some states enforce zero tolerance, and the law is the law, but the sentence seems extreme.
In the UK in a similar situation, man to young girl, if the sex didnt occur until she was 16 as seems the case here, then it is unlikely there would even be a crime. The states are different. Some states at 14 and under you get a stat life sentence. She should have known better, she didn't.
Her own family will suffer now, lots, as a result.

7.25 years seems to be excessive, problem is in the US sex with a minor is classes as Statutory Rape with the sentencing increasing with the age of the adult.

In any case she knew the law, she knew the risk she was taking so she should pay the price of her actions.

I suspect if this was a 35 year old man having sex with with a 15 year old girl attitudes in this thread would be somewhat different, including my own.
