Ortiz can't really complain I suppose, he turned it into a dirty fight and then lost in the same way. Why he was just staring at the ref even after Mayweather threw the first shot I have no idea. What Cortez's purpose was in the ring still remains a mystery, that man is an absolute joke. The interview at the end was pure comedy. I was really tired but the fight woke me up, still not quite sure what I've just seen.

When Mayweather was throwing the final punches, the referee wasn't even looking.
The only reason the ref actually knew what was happening was when Ortiz fell onto the canvas, right in front of the ref.

The result was due to a series of abnormal events, which involved Ortiz headbutting Mayweather, Ortiz attempting to make peace - midfight, the referee not "restarting" the fight, Mayweather and his sucker punch, Ortiz not protecting himself (very strange) and finally the referee not actually seeing any of the final blows.

I know it wasn't a fix, but I tell you what...the 3 men who were in the ring couldn't have planned a better fix, if they tried.

Bizarre.

I completely agree sunama. It did seem fishy. Why was Ortiz looking at the ref when he got punched and why didn't he even look at Mayweather after the first punch? He didn't even attempt to try to get up and he didn't seem bothered after the fight. Smiling, etc.

i was just about to write the same thing, he just stared at the ref, maybe in shock?, he did not look hurt at all from the first punch, but yet he just stared at the ref as if he was waiting for another punch, then he was just smiling, no reaction what so ever from ortiz.

and why would ortiz go for the headbutt in that position, has anyone seen him fight dirty before?

I guess he got caught up in the heat of the moment as he thought he was rattling Floyd. Joe Cortez is supposed to be one of the best out there. I think he's average at best I wasn't fussed on him in the Hatton vs Mayweather fight.

Not sure who rates Cortez, almost every time I've seen him ref a fight there has been something in it where he's become the centre of attention for the wrong reasons!

Bizarre ending, Ortiz had Mayweather on the ropes and was getting the better of him in that exchange then inexplicably decided to headbutt him?! Then what happened afterwards was like something Floyd would have done when he was in the WWE hitting a guy while the refs back was turned!

it was a fix. There will be a rematch around xmas. you wait and see.
in the post interview mayweather is promoting and making comments about rematch

best scripted fight i have ever seen. was like watching wwe

Ortiz was obviously caught up in the moment from all of the build up. With all the testosterone flowing through your veins, it was probably an automatic action.

It can't be a fix, this does no favours to Mayweathers career, it puts a huge question mark over this win.

Ortiz was dumb though, how many times did he need to apologise.

bottom line. Its a fight , leave the kiss and making up out of the ring.

protect yourself at all times. If you are going to fight dirty and head butt, then you should be prepared for a negative reaction.

Floyd is an experienced fighter and that's why he won tonight. Just look at the fight stats they speak for themselves.

I still can't help but think it was fixed/scripted and Floyd/ortiz are trying to milk a second fight around xmas.

Edit: Its all about the money and never about the sport. That why he still hasn't fought Manny, Both of them don't want to lose their reign unless its for the right amount of money.

Pretty much spot on. Ortiz broke the rules first, so we can't forget that.

That ref has to leave the sport tbh

crazy fight tho!

I'm no boxer, but those who are "into" boxing or have trained in boxing, here's a question...

Isn't one of the first things you are taught - protect yourself at ALL times?

For me, if I were a fighter, I wouldn't even need to be told this.

Ortiz, inexplicably, completely let his guard down and decided he was going to make up, mid-fight. I've seen boxers touch gloves mid-fight, but I don't think I've ever seen boxers attempt to hug eachother (to make up), mid-fight.

I still don't think it was a fix, but given what Ortiz did, he deserved to get knocked down in that fashion. That was a school boy error which he should've been taught about in the first few months of him attending boxing training. I can only think that he lost concentration for a few seconds. I can't think of any other explanation.

And surely the ref needs to retire. He is clearly not sharp enough (probably due to age) to officiate such a high profile fight?

What do you guys think?

Absolutely and that's what I meant by Mayweather being more experienced. Mayweather would never drop his guard. Ortiz was going on like he was in a playground fight and making up and saying sorry LMAO.

That is what you call inexperienced.

Just had a chance to catch up on this.

Ortiz swung with a left earlier when the ref was trying to split them after the deliberate headbutt. Got what he deserved. Naive from him.
