Phenom II 965 + A50 Cooler...

Hey guys, I got my new system the other week.

I have the PII 965 3.4 clocked at 3.6, cooling that is the A50, I am kinda disapointed (maybe wrongly) with the idle temps at around 50 c and under load 80 c +.

Firstly, what is the safe temp range of my cpu. And are those temps bad/good/average?

If bad, any suggestions to why? and what I could do to make them better.

Each core is clocked at exactly 3616.03 (200.89 x 18.0), I'm not quite sure on the voltage but if that will help I can check.

Cheers guys, really new to all this so help is appreciated! :)

A amd should not be hitting 80c under load. Turn the pc off like NOW! Take off the cooler clean down the cooler and the cpu and re apply the paste.

Also when you have re applied check in the bios and make sure the pump which should be plugged into the cpu fan header is running at full speed

thats very wrong, you shouldn't be seeing those temps on a 200Mhz overclock, hell you shouldn't see those temps with the stock cooler at that clock speed, have you made sure the cooler is correctly mounted?, did you apply any thermal paste? what case are you using and whats the airflow in and out like?
also download something like CPU-Z and find out what vcore your running, ram, etc etc :)

Possible troll? Even the stock cooler mounted as badly as anyone could manage wouldn't reach 80C surely...

Also, I believe they shut off at around 65C to stop it popping.

just to add to the above, what software are you using to read the temps, most people use CPUID HW Monitor, or Realtemp or Coretemp

i appreciate how laptops are a very different breed, but my 2.5ghz turion 2 gets to 96*c after a few hours of casual gaming, and that is with an additional cooling stand.

But 80*c really is a no-no, something is up.

And someone mentioned a pump? The a50 is an air cooler is it not? :p

lol. no the dont. the stock cooler is rubbish and mine was hitting 70c at stock clocks.

Technically a phenom II is safe at 70, they throttle/shutdown at near & begin melting at 97. Though 55/62 is ahte "safe" guide, op either has a sofa worth of of dust, no tim, dodgy sensors or is badly mounted.

I have just put a 955 system together for a friend and overclocking to 3.8 at 1.45 vcore temps held at 58/59c on the stock cooler while using the AMD overdrive stability test. Unless you are using something silly like OCCT which is about as realistic as using Furmark for GFX cards in that your CPU will never be placed under that kind of strain. I was actually very impressed with the AMD stock cooler.

my amd x6 1055t at full load encoding only hits around 40c with an A50.

are you sure its mounted correctly? and you did clean the old paste away and apply new? you only need a tiny amount
