Corsair H80 v Noctua NH-U9B?

Hi guys,

I have an i7 920 @ 4.0hgz, idles about 35-39 degrees and around 70-75 during Intel burn test,

Im currently using the Noctua which is surprisingly quiet but its huge and I prefer the look of something like the H60 or H80,

My question is: I guess they will perform as good if not better in terms of cooling and noise?

Appriacate any advice, :D

edit: Just noticed I have the NH-U12P (larger sink and fans) not the 9B

I think the H80 would preform better but at twice the price you have to ask if you really need it too.

I have a couple NH-U12P i don't think they're anything special.

I have a H100 on this one but did have a A70 the first thing i notice was a decent drop in the NB temps. Mobo is Asus R3E.
 
No it wont perform better, stick with the noctura. The H80 / H50 and rubbish. The only thing that is just a little better is the h100 and this is just by a small amount.

If you want to water cool then get a proper kit ....
 
I used to have a noctura and was in the same position as you.
Like mlwood said though, either go for a full kit & do it properly or stick with the noctura

sighs, oh to have such an epenis as yours, drools.

It is all well and good guys saying get proper kit, but the op didn't ask for that or you trying to make them feel inferior.

We can only guess what his/her next intention is, maybe it is time to get proper kit when they feel they have learnt enough, or do you feel it takes no knowledge to properly water cool and any old joe can do it, or what's more maybe the op can't afford it yet. So may be a stop gap.

I personally can afford it but i shant till i feel i have enough info.

Very flippant advice you give.

By the way if you don't like what i've just said you can KISS MY ASS!

The point he's trying to make is that there is no compelling reason to buy an ALC unit. They aren't as efficient as high end coolers and they don't exactly teach you how to watercool. All they do is give you bragging rights that you are "water cooling" when really they are targeting air coolers, hence the argument that you should either do it properly or leave it for better air cooling alternatives. There are some good reasons to get the ALC units, such as if your case can't support tall coolers but the majority of mid tower cases should.

As for actual advice to the OP. Your temperatures look good. The H80 is a better unit than the NH-U12P but the Noctua cooler isn't exactly high end by modern standards. If you just want the H80 of the looks, then there's little else to recommend. It will perform decently but you'll have to reduce the fan speed or otherwise it will be loud. If you are more interested in cooling performance, then look to a high end air cooler like the Silver Arrow.

What knowledge does he gain from a H50/H80 anyways, assuming you meant that.

Also, what he said is true, the ALC units are "pointless". They're ironically for Epenis ; "My PC is WC'ed.................. with my H80"

No i don't know who Mlwood is but i can get naked quick. :p Does he know who i am :D

You don't get any knowledge from a H80 but they are less bulky then air coolers and a good stop gap, less money then a full watercooling setup, i wouldn't call them watercooling, i don't think there is any epenis attached to H80/H100, when i see them i think smart car.

Owns 3 H100's :o but they'll do for now. two on push/pull and one on push.

As for performance the H100 is out doing any of the air coolers i have owned.

My point is its very easy to tell someone to get proper kit, but not very helpful.

Don't see it as a stop gap either, infact I would put them in the same class as high end air coolers, custom loops are in a class of there own, for both price and performance.

I choose the H80 because it suited my needs, and I intend to use it for many years to come. I weighed up buying new memory + silver arrow/nh-d14 or closed loop, and closed loop was simply the least hassle for me personally.

You have the Noctua, I'd stick with it, on average the H80 wont perform any better or worse, but again its personal preference.

Nothing weird i have an AMD using a spare cpu waiting for bulldozer, that to me is also a stop gap, its not a whole rig just a part, the h80/h100 is just a part, is it not changeable without changing the whole rig. :eek:

yes he is entitled to his opinion so am i, but it wasn't very helpful to the op, its like me telling another horse owner that because i have a horse that is a northan dancer bloodline their horse is rubbish and they should get a proper one.

In my book that is being a bit of a snob.

Not everyone has endless amounts of money to throw at their rigs. Hence why i said in my original post if he wanted to spend twice as much on the h80, i do believe the h80 would preform better, because i've owned the NH-U12P's so i'm aware of their performance and i wasn't that impressed by them.

Now lets all kiss and makeup
