Mayweather vs Ortiz (17th Sept)

wow just seen this wtf was with the bit at the end? That was incredible rant from Floyd.

Was a cheap shot as well tbh look at the ref wasn't even paying attention.

If you watch the above video, after Mayweather lands the first punch, why on Earth did Ortiz not take evasive action? He just stood there waiting for the 2nd (follow up) punch, when the natural reaction would be to put distance between yourself and the attacker.

On top of it all, Ortiz seems pretty pleased with the result, during the interview.

Very odd wasn't it?! Not like it was a quick 1-2 combo from Floyd either he threw the first pulled back and threw the second!

When the first one landed Ortiz didn't put his hands up, move out the way, hell he didn't even look at Mayweather before the second one came in!!

Wow that's how it ended? I couldn't stay up to watch but damn thats a cheap win if thats how it ended and WTF is wrong with him to lass out at Larry?

What a tool.

everything about that seems dodgy ,why after the first punch he stood there like a complete tool waiting for the next shot to come is baffling me, like others have said ortiz seems to be happy about it all.

instant karma ? lol

He got $2.5 million and lost a fight he had very little chance of winning with an amazing excuse.

Ortiz is a pretty nice guy and far too apologetic, very naive. Mayweather saw his chance and took it.

Once actyually in the ring, Ortiz knew all too well, that the accuracy of Mayweather was going to eventually overwhelm him. He knew in his mind that he had very little to no chance of winning, hence the headbutt. He was ready to quit in my opinion, which is why he didnt put his guard up after the 1st punch, and went looking to Cortez for a reaction.

He's a great fighter and has a good career infront of him. I'd like to see him fight Khan. I think the two are on par with each other.

It'll be Mayweather vs Pacquiao on March / May time I think, but Mayweather will prove too much for Manny.

Good on Larry for telling him if he was 50yrs younger he'd of kicked his ass. Mind you Floyd does have a point, he never gives him a well done or offers the shaking hand. He probably felt it was his moment, and Merchant wasn't giving him any due credit..

Even though it ended too soon, it was pure entertainment from start to finish.

I hear what you are saying, thedoc46, in that Ortiz knew he couldn't win. But even so, he shouldn't just give up, when he quite clearly still had plenty in the tank. Moment earlier, he had Mayweather on the ropes, which tell us this.

I took another look at the 2 punches.

The first punch was a sucker punch, however, it didn't have much power. Ortiz took it and stood with his hands down. He wasn't rocked. It was the 2nd punch that did the damage and was considerably more powerful. The question is, why did Ortiz not protect himself on the 2nd punch? Instead, he stood there, both hands down, both feet still. He made absolutely no attempt to defend himself from the 2nd punch, even though he knew it was coming.

I've not seen the post fight interview yet but a possible reason why he didn't fight back after the first punch was because he wasn't even sure if the fight was back on?

What the **** was the ref doing? Very bizarre.

That's how I saw it, Ortiz was clearly not yet back in fight mode and that was very obvious for Mayweather to see which is why to me they were incredibly cheap shots, though not technically illegal.

That said, the headbut was absolutely outrageous, how Ortiz can claim it was accidental is beyond me.

So we have extremely dirty fighting as well as the OTT attempts at making up from Ortiz, a couple of very cheap shots from Mayweather (although he had just been on the receiving end of a blatant headbut, so maybe Ortiz should have expected Mayweather to look for revenge as early as possible), and some truly incompetent refereeing. None of the three come out of it looking great, although at least the fight ended the way it was always going to end anyway, so nobody should feel robbed. Except maybe the fans, setbacks like this are now all to often in boxing, even the most die hard fan can see why it's on its last legs.

As far I'm concerned Cortez was signalling to fight here and he actually said "let's go". Also, what people to fail to mention here is Ortiz was warned for butting about 40 seconds into round 4 by Cortez. Ortiz deserved all he got.

He does, what you don't see is the terrible refereeing that follows it. Ortiz rather unnecessarily still feels the need to make up, which Mayweather seems to accept and the ref looks away. This is why the shots were unsporting rather than illegal. Don't get me wrong, I think Mayweather has the least to answer for, I just think all parties could have acted differently.

But yeah, you can definately say Ortiz got what he deserved, he was leading with the head quite a few times before making it so obvious, he made it into that kind of fight so to then try to back away from his actions was more than a little naive.

What a monumental cockup of a fight.

1. Ortiz showing too much remorse for his headbutt.
2. Shameful sucker-punch from Mayweather. (Okay it was legal, but undeniably a sucker punch.)
3. Ref not being clear enough when restarting the fight, he should have taken more control.

But at the end of the day, I've lost all respect for Mayweather due to the following; The way he chews gum with his lips wide open like he's some sort of top gangster, how he was poking Ortiz in the neck and how he lost the plot with Merchant.

I agree. I don't know why Cortez refs big fights anymore. I'm not fussed on him at all. Kenny Bayliss is a lot better.
