A number of travellers have moved from Dale Farm in Essex ahead of the eviction due to begin on Monday.

Basildon Council said about 12 families had already left the unauthorised site at Crays Hill.

A spokesman said preparations continued ahead of the clearance, which is due to begin at 0800 BST on Monday.

But a last-minute meeting between residents and the council was cancelled after representatives were told by protesters they were no longer welcome.

Cllr Tony Ball, Leader of the council, said he was "very concerned" by reports that "so-called supporters appear to be calling the shots".

"We wanted to do everything possible to keep residents updated about the operation and to listen to any concerns and address any final requirements," he said.

"It would appear that we now have no line of communication to the Dale Farm residents.

"We are very concerned that tension has increased and it may now make our job of clearing the site in a safe and orderly manner even more difficult."

Illegal pitches, to the left of the red line, are at the centre of the dispute over Dale Farm

Apparently they have allotted around six weeks for the clearance. This may provide some free entertainment ... more background here.

Send a tank in to bring down the hippie tower with the professional protestors at the entrance followed by the bulldozers. Job done.

One of my old housemates is off down there tonight so he can do his usual and end up putting his arse on the line for some cracking photos.

I'm surprised Channel 4 haven't got in there with a documentary yet, this will be very eventful i'd wager.

From the Wiki -

As the largest travellers' site in Britain, Dale Farm has drawn much media interest. It site was featured on the Channel Five programme At War with Next Door in December 2006.[9] It was also featured on the "Children of the Road" episode of the CBBC series My Life, and in the Channel 4 series, Big Fat Gypsy Weddings. In July 2011, the eviction of the site was the subject of the BBC television documentary entitled The Big Gypsy Eviction.[10]

their children will probably be on the front line..

a bunch of "travellers" used to invade a local farmers field when i was a little boy, we often used to go playing around the area and one day a bunch of travellers had moved in unknown to us... we got chased off by about 10 kids and all ran into my house a good 5minutes away..

next think i know theres like 30 kids outside my gate most of them wielding knives! terrifying experience as a young boy.

Yes, it's going to be like a war zone tomorrow. Couldn't be happier.

I live around the corner and these people have caused issues for years in our community. Forget all this ethnic cleansing rubbish, the people campaigning on behalf of these animals haven't had to live alongside them for all this time.

Wouldn't it be better to just fire a few Hellfire missiles at the camp instead? That wouldn't put any innocent lives at risk at least.

I can't quite understand how squatting or gypsies are not made illegal in this day and age. It isn't an issue of religion, race or history just simple common decency. This "campsite" isn't being cleared because they are all thieving scum, but because they broke the law. David Gilmour is being forced to tear down a shed because it breeches planning permission, he isn't claiming ageism.

It's funny all the signs they hold up saying ethnic cleansing do they even know what that means? we want them out of our country not for them to die.
