story was that he was angry for getting his reposting cancelled for not doing a cleaning job properly and then got very drunk in southampton and upon returning to the boat was handed a rifle and put on guard duty

Why did the navy put someone who was drunk on guard. If you turned up at my unit drunk you wouldn't do guard, you'd be sent to bed and would pay the price when you've sobered up.

It doesn't say he was drunk, only that he had been drinking on previous days.

Yes that article but I read the mid afternoon version.

Which quite clearly stated he was drunk, its obviously been edited out now.
