GPU temps

Hey all,

Just upgraded to the EVGA "SuperClocked" GTX 580 and it really is sublime.

At the moment I'm playing Metro 2033 with maximum settings (1920x1080), (bar DoF because it's absolute drivel) and it plays as smooth as anything.

However, I noticed that the card temps got up to around 80C, which does seem rather high, and a little worrying - is it okay to maintain these sort of temps for prolonged periods of time? i.e. playing for 5-6 hours

Should I take the GFX settings down a notch just to keep it cooler?

Thanks in advance!

80c seems pretty good to me for a 580.

My 6950 (overclocked+unlocked to 6970) hits 80-82c in Metro, but the card is rated up to something like 100c.

I think its fine.

Anything over 70 reduces the life of the card in the long run, but to be honest, by the time the card gives way you'll probably be buying another one.

80 is fine. It's not like the old 4870's which would hit 80 playing Pacman.

That understandable, so long as there are no immediate consequences then I'm more than happy - I'm just hoping it can maintain this performance for a year or so before I have to shell out for a new card.

I'm just too used to laptops, which die far too quick for what you pay.

Thanks!

If you're using msi afterburner, you can set up a fan profile so that it gets more aggressive at those high temps. It'll get noisy though, but i don't hear that when gaming.

I manage to hit 75c from Minecraft @ 1920x1200 and all the trimmings, I rarely go above 50c when playing Civ5 DX11 full, Crysis2 DX11 on full (except for the shadows) on a 6950.

What I'm trying to say is that it might just be Metro pushing it that high, try another game with similar specifications and monitor temps.

Thanks for the replies guys, it seems that hitting the 80C mark isn't all that bad then, and with a 3 year warranty, I haven't got much to worry about - within 3 years I'll have already upgraded anyway.

On a side note, using Nvidia's OC scanner application my GPU, at 90% load and 85C is only using 60% fan speed, which to me seems pretty low. Is there anyway I change the incremental increase? i.e. for every 5c the GPU temp rises the fan speed will increase by X.

Thanks again!

Afterburner will work with any nvidia card, (im using it on gigabyte gpu's). Evga does have a similair program though, known as precision.

Evga Precision and Msi Afterburner are basically the same app, Afterburner is normally prefered with overclocking because it lets u adjust the voltage also.

Not entirely. For instance the Asus GTX 580 Matrix, Afterburner is unable to set fan the fan properly and 9 times out of 10 will just set to 100%. Also some voltages are not available.

But yes Afterburner will work for the majority of nVidia cards, not all though.

Also if u register the card withing 30 days u get that extended to 10 years.

Ahh, thanks for that, iirc an asus en 8800gt i had could only use asus's smart doctor program for fan settings, monitoring etc.
