Nikon announcement inc (has to be..) I AM COMING (ohh err?)

Could be the D400/800/4 as well!

Would be nice as I was hoping that I could grab one before the baby arrived :D

Won't be both and I doubt it'll be the DSLRs. Mirrorless makes sense for them, however much real photographers are disinterested it's where they're bleeding market share in the far east and consumer markets in general.

Could be the D400 I suppose, but the mirrorless has been so well leaked by now...

I'm well out of the loop here too. Can someone explain what the mirrorless thing is all about? :p

I've been hearing about it for some time and honestly haven't gotten off my arse to look up about it.

SO in due course I'm being just as lazy by asking others to post the info for me :p

It's where basically you shoot and view through your sensor rather than through a pentaprism-mirror that reflects the light from the plane infront of the shutter/sensor. So no mirror flipping or flexing to expose the light through the shutter to the sensor, if your get me?

I understand...does it offer better IQ for example? What advantages will the end user see when using the camera?

Will it affect the images at all?

For example will you be able to tell the difference between an image taking on a normal DSLR and a mirrorless one?

It just cuts down the size and complexity. The disadvantages at the moment are usually that if you want a view finder you have to buy an EVF (electronic view finder) which are usually low resolution. I think the X100 EVF is very good though so I'd expect most new mirrorless cameras to have very good EVFs.

Surely thats what people been trying to explain? The main drive of it from a company's point of view is allowing a more compact setup whilst still being able to achieve DSLR level IQ, as the bulk is what usually drive the mainstream crowd away from a DSLR.

What I'm trying to establish is what is the main drive for a mirrorless system! :)

They're a hell of a lot smaller, mostly.

The Nex 5 in that picture, for example has a full APS-c sized sensor.

Silent shooting - everyone raved how quiet the X100 is? All that's moving is the shutter. No flip flop like DSLRs. I know it's a rangefinder style, but the same iah can be said for the micro four third system. One major point, when they can get over the buffer barrier, is faster frame per sec. Think sony and it's 10 fps through mirror, now mirrorless will save light loss and the machine gun flip flopping of mirror.

None that good yet, most focused on compact system instead of speed.

Yeah, it does seem that because they're still relatively new they lack with a few things like auto focus speed and also manually focusing is usually very slow and cumbersome (on the two I've tried (gf1/x100)). There's a few other drawbacks but things are advancing fast.

They say the Olympus E-P3 has AF as fast as a serious DSLR. Reviews do seem to agree with the right lens, it's an interesting, though very expensive, camera.

I kinda see the 'better than a compact, smaller than a DSLR' angle but I'm not convinced over something like the Olympus XZ-1 or Canon S100.
